need to buy a safe, not sure I need one this big, but people tell me to buy bigger than I think I will need, anybody have one??? Any advice, good or bad appreciated.

Two considerations to start with... How far do you live from Fire Department response??? and How many guns to you need to secure??

When I'm looking at a safe, I'm concerned about the rating for attack deterrence in minutes... Some are UL certified, some are not...

I live fairly close to the city/county fire station and their response time is going to be about 3 minutes from the initial call until they are applying water...My grand kids live in a rural area and the response time may be 15 minutes, so their fire rating would need to be higher..

Depending on your shooting interests, age, and number of firearms you currently have, consider what your likelihood will be of future acquisitions...and maybe other extended family members (if they don't have a safe, or may pass on in the future...) At my point in life, I've been getting rid of many that I no longer shoot, so that if something happens to me, my wife will have less to worry about...20 years ago, it was a different story..The larger safe allows storage of several without them getting banged together when putting one in and taking one out..

Just some food for thought..

definitly go alot bigger then you need. I have a 44 rifle safe and it is full as I want with half that in there. To get the rated # rifles into there they would have to be single shot rifles without scopes.

Good advice so far, I do not like my rifles banging together and all rifles get put on a silicon sock before goin g in the safe. My 26 gun safe is pretty full with just 8 rifles and two hunting handguns.there is room for more guns but I dont like having to take them all out just to get to the one thats in the back of the safe.

My philosophy on it is this. If you but a 12 gun, you may get 6 in it, if you get a 24 you may get 12 and so on. About 1/2 of what they say they will hold is a starting point. Also make sure you take into consideration anything else you may be keeping in it. I have an area for important documents and other things also. I have a 36 and I have 12 rifles and shotguns in it, I wouldn't want to many more in there.

Much like what others have said, we tend to pack our safes full once we get them. Consider that you may not only have weapons in the safe, but some of your reloading equipment as well (not to who knows what else). I have a 33 cubic Cannon safe and wish I had two of them for less than 10 rifles, about 10 handguns and ammo. Remember, they are smaller than you think and they fill up fast! Perhaps it can be overdone, but a friend has about 40+ rifles and probably 20 handguns. Between them and his reloading stuff, he has (5) FIVE safes and is out of room! Get the idea?

fire department reponse .. lol thats funny where i live the house would be burnt down by time they got here . one side of me is north part of the county and the other south. the north fire dep is about 15mins away but the the south is 25mins away(not counting the time it takes the south to get to the station. volunteers.) a house had smoke in it they thought there house was on fire here in the subdisvion and it was the norths side north fire dep. called the south f.d and told them to respond to it because they was busy .funny thing was the north f.d never had a call before it ...
