Fathers day is coming on June 18th, It is a day to thank and pay honor to our fathers. It is also a day where our children pay tribute to us. I have always believed that it was my duty as a father to teach my sons about the abudance of grace god gave us in the outdoors. My oldest son loves to go hunting, fishing, and ride ATV's we have taken many picture together. I would like to see pictures of you and your fathers or you and your kids in the outdoors, The idea behind this post is for us to remember the great times we had with those who have left us, in the great outdoors or relive times with those who are still with us. I am tring to get some pics scanned of my father in law so I can share them. Anyways, I bet there are some interesting pics out there. Let's see how many people can share their favorite father son or daughter moments by Fathers day. So post those pics, if you have a story throw it in there too.

Great idea!!!! I'll post a pic right after Fathers Day. We are going to visit my folks that weekend.

My Dad (he is 81) is totally responsible for the love of my country and the outdoors I have. We were hunting and camping as far back as I can remember. He worked (and retired) as a firefighter and did many second jobs at the same time (built houses). How he managed to spend so much time with family I'll never know. Seemed like we were always going somewhere outdoors. BUT, the most important thing my Dad instilled in me was a deep sense of right and wrong. One thing I remember him telling me was, "If you want to find out what a person is really like, take 'em hunting under the nastiest conditions possible and their true character will come out." Boy, was he right. He is very special and I DREAD the day when he and Mom are no longer here. I usually call them once a week and I think I will do that right now.

I have two girls. Both have been killing from my lap since they were six. They are 8 and 10 now. My youngest killed her first hog this past deer season. It was definitely one of my proudest moments. Like their first deer, their first homeruns in fast pitch softball, their first squirrels, oh yeah and their first steps and words and all that other stuff…

Now back to the hunt. I took her to my deer stand with me for an afternoon hunt because I had seen a group of hogs come in to my feeder that morning and was hoping they would be back. She had been on me the whole season to get her a hog and it never worked out. Well, we sat all afternoon and never saw a thing until right before dark I saw movement in the trees behind the feeder. Suddenly, 8 hogs busted out of the tree line and came running to the feeder and started feeding. They were going crazy, fighting each other and running around trying to get every kernel of corn. If you’ve ever seen wild hogs feeding you know what I’m talking about, it’s not easy to get off a clean shot at one of them, especially for an 8 year old. As I got Morgan up in my lap and got her .243 NEF into position, I asked which one she was going to shoot. She said the “big black one”. Ok, I said, wait until she turns sideways and let her have it. Well after about 3 minutes the little .243 roars and I watched the big sow turned and trot off. No sign of a hit or any clue it was injured. Now, keep in mind, Morgan has killed 5 deer in her 3 short seasons and has never missed. I said “It doesn’t look good sweet heart; I think you might have missed.” She says “No way, Daddy. I aimed right where you told me to.” So off I go, looking for sign of a hit. I left her in the stand and walked down to the feeder and went to where the big sow was standing and followed her trail for about 200 yards, no blood, no hair, nothing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
I came back to the feeder and called her down and here’s how our conversation went.

Me: Where was she standing when you shot?
Morgan: Over there, on the other side of the feeder
Me: No, she was standing right here. See her tracks?
Morgan: No, Daddy. She was standing over there.
Me: Did you shoot at the big black one?
Morgan: No
Me: Which one did you shoot?”
Morgan: “The peach one, Daddy”
Me: PEACH ONE?! I didn’t see any peach pigs!
Morgan: I promise Daddy, it was peach and it was standing right over there.
Me: Ok, honey. Let’s go look.

20 Yards later we find one dead, um, peach pig.

RayB,
Awesome story and Pics, Those are some memories your daughter will treasure for the rest of her life.

Come on guys I know you all have stories and pics to share, now get on with it. Don't be shy everyone had a bowl cut back in the day or wore parachute pants hunting (whoops that may have been just me) I look forward to reading and observing more of your stories and pics.

Here's my oldest with her first squirrel and no, you weren't the only one to ever hunt in parachute pants. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Morgan and her very first deer. 6 years old and the first time to ever pull the trigger on a centerfire rifle. Killed this boy graveyard dead from 80 yards. He never took a step. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

This is my oldest and her buck she killed this year. It's her first deer since she was six when she decided she didn't want to kill animals anymore. Then she decided she would kill the "ugly" ones like hogs and squirrels. Now I think she's back hunting full time! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif I really enjoyed this hunt because she hasn't hunted with me much. Just some of my memories I will cherish for ever....

This thread is a great idea. I like all the stories on this thread. Unfortunaltly i dont have any hunting pics yet of me and my Dad but hopefully I will have soon. This is my favorite story though.

I was 10 years old bow hunting with my Dad where I grew up in West Virginia. We was going down an old logging road one evening to meet up with my brother n law. We came up on an old home place where the yard was fairly grown up. I saw a tearling in the field in front of the house and I wispered to my dad "Hey Dad there's a deer!" He told me to try to get a shot. My bow was an Indian bow he bought me for Christmas the year before. We was standing about 40 yards from the yearling when I drew back my bow. I held the pin on her side and shot. The yearling heard my bow when I shot and started to run. Then all of a sudden we heard a loud thud. He said "I think you hit it!" because the yearling did a flip end over end. When we got to it, it was laying there with an arrow stuck in its head above her eye. But she was still alive! My Dad sneaked up to her to attempt to cut her throt when she jumped up and ran off, BAWLING!! Me being 10 years old and this yearling being my first deer i started Bawling too. Everytime he got close to her she would run 10 or 15 yards. I ran in the other direction and stood behind a tree so I wouldnt see what was going on. Then a minute or so later I heard my Dad yell out really loud. He had finally got close enoguh to her to cut her throat and as soon as he did she jumped up to run and when she jumped up she head butted him in his chin. He ended up getting 14 stiches cause she just busted his chin wide open. After all of that was done and over with is when I got really excited about my first deer. I have pics but I havent run across them in years. I am going to start looking for them again so that I can post them. Alot lot of people that I have told this story too over the years havent believed me until I show them my pics. I was aiming for her rib cage but "Buck Fever" done got the best of me by this time. If she would've stood still I would've missed her by 5 feet. That was the best time that I have had with my Dad that I can remember. Its been 17 years since I killed that yearling and that was a moment in my life that I will never forget. My Dad started my out hunting when I was 5 years old by taking me squirrel hunting. Thats was by far the best thing he has ever done for me. Sorry for such a long story but I like to tell it every now and again.

Picture of my boy flyfishing at our favorite AZ mountain lake. He's fishing with the flyrod his grandfather (my "old man") custom made for himself years before. This picture was taken the day after we spread my father's ashes in the same back cove we were fishing over father's day last year. My son, my brother and I will be back there visiting "the old man" in a few weeks.

EP1127.jpg

This same night we had a pair of bald eagles in and out of their nest at the top of an old dead ponderosa that overlooks the back cove, and we also had a few elk down to water in the same cove. The old man picked a hell of a place to spend eternity. Sure do miss the cranky old fart. As you can tell by my avatar, one of my favorite pictures, and not just because of the nice scenery.

Next one is of my son and I (again last year), and his first centerfire coyote taken with his Winchester Mod 70 compact in .243, which he received from Xmas the previous December. We were out hunting for Bobcat over Xmas, but had to leave early when my father passed away on Xmas day. The minute my father passed away, I was sitting on the same point examining the same indian petroglyphs with my boy, that I had been sitting at with my father 21 years prior to the day. Sends shivers down my spine when I think about it. The old man would have certainly of approved.

At any rate, this resulting picture was several weeks before I found out I in fact was not "dying" as I had believed for quite a long period of time. At the time I worried this could potentially be my last outing with my son, and I was doing my level best to make some great memories and get some nice pictures taken for him to remember his old man by. Thankfully, it turned out to be nothing, and I'll be a pain in his rear for years to come it looks like. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Awesome idea for a thread!

Here is my dad & I on one of our many pheasant hunts. As far back as I can remember (I'm almost 21...) I have been hunting pheasants every year with him and haven't missed one! (haven't missed a year, that is, missed plenty of pheasants... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif) I remember carrying my red ryder bb gun and then my Rem 870 Youth 20GA and now my Rem 870 Super 12GA. Lots of good memories in the field. It's fun to just hang out with him for a couple weeks every year.

I'm going to try to help him get his first yote this winter.

Great story Davr, and great pics to. It looks like you are just as great a dad to your son as your father was to you. Passing on tradition is an awesome way to show your kids you love them !!
PD Buster, great pics and story, I went through the same gun progression growing up. funny how each gun gets easier to handle and be safe with huh?

Davr, pm me I have a question for you

O.K. here is my daughters first trip alone with daddy for hunting to "The Ranch" It was in Dec. of last year and she was 5 1/2" yrs. old. She had to put up with no running water, no electricity, and her crazy daddy( Pic 2.) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif The first pic is what she got to wake up to. The third pic is her kicking my arse at Go Fish (she won $5 off the old man) the last pic is about 20 yds from where she sat at her first ground blind with daddy (bring sticky candy guys, it really works to keep 'em silent) and watched me make a 215 yd shot on a viscous polecat (hit it in the head btw) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. She loves the ranch and is already geared up to go again this year. She really likes the fact that her litttle brother can't go alone with daddy yet . She is content to use her camera and her B.B. gun for now and to me just having her there and enjoying her company while she still likes me is priceless!
