Favorite .223, 60-69 gr. Coyote Bullet

The 65 SGK is a great/tough bullet and no doubt it would be up to the task, but for coyotes at 223 velocities Id stay at 60gr. And there is 3 that come to mind.i havent used it yet but The 62gr Nosler Varm hollow point at 223 velocity would be ideal IMO. as all noslers its likely gonna be very accurate. Will not be as explosive as a vmax (a good thing) but more so than the 65 gameking. And they are fairly cheap.
Next choices would be a 60gr Hornady sp or 60gr Sierra hp.

So many good options but id give the Nosler 62 a try.

Ghilliedup, Ackleyman,

I have tried the 65gr GK but it shoots off to the left of other flat based bullets that I have dialed in (60gr V-max, 53gr SMK, 60gr Hornady SP). Your comment on 223 velocity and the heavy bullets is valid. I read so many comments about this and that bullet being Thor's hammer on coyotes but many do not mention the cartridge or velocity it is going. A 40gr Vmax is gonna behave way differently in a 22-250 vs 22 Hornet. The 65gr GK would probably do great with a Texas heart shot but may not do what it needs to do if it hits broadside between the ribs from a 223. Looks like I need to stick to 55-63gr bullets. Thanks.

Sierra also makes the semi Spitzers that are designed to open up easier at vel the small to medium 22's deliver.Though a 223 is really kinda in between that and the high velocity 250. Go to their site and read up on the bullets in 22 cal, they have a lot of good info. -

Has anyone had good luck with 60gr bullets and H4895? I just loaded some up but haven’t been to the range to shoot them yet.

Got my first shot with a 65 Gameking at a coyote last night. It sure made a thud when I hit the berm behind her, should drop the next one though...

64gr Berger varmint, I can't say I've heard of those before. I was shooting the 52s for a little while and they sure made small groups but I thought they were a little soft for the coyotes. Have you shot the 52's? Are the 64's just as soft?

I got a couple coyotes with them, man do they make a wallop when you hit the dogs but too much splash damage even just from hitting a rib. My buddy trapped a coyote one day that broke the swivel on the trap so he picked me up and we tracked it down. I got about a 80 yard left to right running shot on it(well running as well as it could with a foot hold on one leg.) I had maybe 4 seconds to think about what was going on before it was in another several acre patch of cat tails, I hit it in the hind quarter and got another shot that put it down for good. But when my buddy was skinning the coyote the bullet in the hind quarter was sitting right in the fist size wound it made, practically fell out. I still have a full magazine full of 52gr Bergers but I will use them on paper or something.

I use the Berger 52's in my 223, which I switched to a few years ago. All in all, I can't complain with the results. The 250 or so coyotes shot with them may disagree but I can't complain.

The coyotes here are not overly big and wouldn't require the same knock down power as your eastern coyote though.

I get more pass through's with the 64's and they don't turn the coyotes insides to jello like the 52's but they do knock them flat.

Maybe they are a little tougher down here. I've heard some good things about the 53gr Vmaxs and started shooting those last year. They are great on foxes, and coyotes that are ether broadside or facing straight at you but my quartering shots to the shoulder led to large impact damage and poor kills.

So I'm just working my way up the bullet ladder and shooting 65gr SMK's this year, got my first chance last night to try them on a coyote but I hit dirt instead, hit the dirt hard though, sounded promising

Running a 1:8 ARP barrel.

Have looked into the following, just looking for real results on coyotes:

65 gr. Gameking SBT
60 gr. V-Max
69 gr. HPBT sierra

Short story, been round the world with all the new stuff. I run all my 22 centerfire with 60gr Hornady sp. I do like the 60gr v-max but it will splash some and rip up hide more at times.

In the end, I run the 60gr sp. It's not sexy, it's not cool kid, but it will stack the fur as dependable as the 22 cal. Can on coyote. Best hit, performance and velocity combination I have found in the 223. In the 22-250 velocity range it's a beast.

Smokeless,
I've tried every which way but loose to get the 60gr Hornady SP to shoot decent groups in ARs & a Mini-14. They shoot cloverleafs (almost) in my Remington 788. I'm using 1:8 & 1:9 twists in .223 Wylde chambers. H335, W748, & Benchmark can't do it for me. So far, the 53 SMK is the top dogger. Any help would be appreciated. I also tried varying the OAL on loads that shot reasonably well but with no improvement.

4895, TAC, and CFE223 all work well for me.

With the 60's you need slower burn powders. Hope this helps.

Smokeless,
I'm going to go one more round with my powders with a new upper. If no winners I'll get a pound of CFE223. I haven't seen TAC but will consider it if CFE doesn't do the trick. I'll look for 4895.
