Favorite Deer Rifle

My favorite deer rifle is my remington 700 bdl in .270 cal with a 4-12x40 VX-1 leupold. I mostly hunt mule deer but the last whitail I shot was with my old winchester 30-30.
 
So far my go to gun is my Browning A-Bolt Synthetic Stalker in .270 Winchester with a 3-9X50 Leupold Vari-X II loaded with 130 SSTs or factory Federal 130 BTSPs. 12 out 14 deer dropped on the spot. The other two I heard fall over as they ran out of sight. Never lost one either.

I however by no means hunt with just that caliber though. I use a .243, 7 Rem Mag, 30-06, 444, 450, 308 to name a few but I find myself gravitating to the ol' 270 most of the time.
 
Never shot a whitetail, but what the heck, I'll jump in. I like my Sako in 6.5X55 with 140 grain Barnes XLCs. I'll start using 130 grain TSXs this year though since they've worked so well in my other rifles.
 
I shot a Remington Sendero in the .300 Win Mag for years but got tired of lugging it around. Bought a Remington Model Seven SS synthetic in 260 with Leupold 3.5-10x40 VX-III Riflescope and never looked back.
 
The only whitetail I ever shot was with a Stevens .22 single shot and a .22 long.

Why do you guys use such huge guns for such little animals??;-)
 
My favorite Deer rifle, since 1961, has been the .270 Winchester with 130gr. handloaded ammo.. 61.0gr/H4831/CCI200primers and Speer 130gr. Hot Cors.. Never had to shoot a deer more than once and all but one was DRT (dropped right there).

Here in Washington we have to use .243, 6mm or bigger. In some of the areas where I hunt 250-300 yard shots are not uncomon. I have never used a .243 cal but I have seen a few shot with one and they all needed more than one shot to put them down.
 
Never shot a whitetail, but for muleys my favorite rifle is a 1957 Winchester Model 70 .300H&H Mag. topped with a vintage Weaver KV 2.75-5x variable scope, shooting 180gr Silvertips.

We have a 6mm minimum here in CO also. The .22 kill was in Michigan. Fact is I don't know if there was a minimum caliber there at the time. Where I grew up deer were an important part of our food chain and how (and when) they were killed was not given much consideration.

That was 45 or 50 years ago and times and attitudes change. Mine certainly have /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I'm just not amenable to historical revision, especially of my own life. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Only centerfire rifles are legal for deer in Texas. That includes ANY centerfire even .17 Rem and .22 Hornet.

I have seen lot of deer killed with the .243 and even the 220 swift that didn't need a second shot and didn't go far.

I know a lot of people that use the 22-250 here.

Personally I have killed most of my deer with a Ruger M77 in .270, and a .257 Roberts also in a Ruger using .117 gr Hornady LM.
 
Rem. model 721, .270 win. I bought in 1958 at age 12. Has peep sights on it. Couldn't count the number of deer and elk that rifle slayed. The .270 is a great caliber, thanks to Jack O'Conner.
