Favorite Deer Rifle

My Grandpa gave me his Ruger M77 .270. My first year using it I shot an nice 8 pointer. The 2nd year 14 pointer. Never really been a fan of Ruger. But this one shoots good so I love it.

And you guys that shot 14 deer or whatever and never had to use a follow up...what you got them tied up to a tree. Or you must be a lot better shot than me. Because around here Deer Hunting is a way of life. It's not uncommon to shoot deer running 300-400 yards out, sometimes even more. Its the most Hill billyish thing you will ever see. But I wouldn't miss it for the world.

Last year my favorite was an old 99 savage in 300 that I got from and old fellow at a gun show. A beat up old gun for sure, but one shot blew the heart in half on an 8 point buck running. That old rifle points like a fine shotgun.

Mine is a M700 custom in 280 AI and 160 gr AB.
I have also used 338 RUM (my favorite)!, 280 Rem, 35 Whelen, 30-06, and 44 Mag in a S&W M629.

My favorite deer rifle is my Barrett Model 82A1 Semi Automatic Ten Round .50 Caliber Rifle /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif. It knocks them down no matter where you hit them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I love it. You all should buy one. It is so worth it.

ck543, one who didn't know better might get the impression that you are not entirely serious about the PM experience. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

Well up Nord our deer grow JUST alil bigger then those texas grown deer. Some of our fawns drop out heavier then the southern boys adult deer. We also have to shoot in the thick stuff so shot placement is more diffucult. A 243 can get the job done. But most deer camps 270 is the minium. I have shot my 270 since i could point it down range and I have killed deer with it ever since. Mostly '06 and 7mm are the most common. Then there is assorted different cailbers of old timmer guns like lever action kid killers 30-30 and ole bolt 300 savages. Drive guns a diverse some 12 gauges stoked with slugs and many different lever/pump/automatic lead shooters. New guys like more power, more lead fling'n and more speed. Keep shooting till they drop.

Favorite deer rifle-

The one I have in the truck when I see him.

Probably be a .308, I own three, and would probably own more if my cousin and Dad wouldn't make fun of me. I load 110gr Vmax in my Model 600, 168grBTHP in my 700PSS, and 150grSP in my FAL

Other than that, I might have a .243 with Nosler 55gr ballistic tips. Been known to plug one with a .22 Hornet also. Shot alot of Hogs with a .22mag, but no deer.

It all amounts to shot placement, alot of guys try to compensate for poor shooting with a super duper short magnum with 180gr bullets designed for Elk,Moose, etc. Whitetails are usually not tough enough to make the bullets expand.

from what i can see yall are shootin rifles lol so i figure i shall represent the shotgun side....my favorite gun would without a doubt be my ithaca model 37 deerslayer in 20g...smoothbore and accurate as hell out to about 150yds my county changed this year to a rifle county and i refused to use one..this way my result....10yds...257lbs...dead on the spot...

I figure I would chime in here....
.264 mag in Sako trigger, custom 28 in. Shilin stainless barrel, McMillan stock, 4X-16X mil dot Sightron Scope (going with a Kahles as soon as I can afford it). Custom recipe with 140 gr. Game King bullets, pushed along at 3,100 ft. per sec. Puts 5 bullets in the same hole at 10 yards. Top 2 kills: Javalina at 650 yrds, White Tail deer at 534.
I try not to make a habit of shooting that far, but sometimes if thats the animal you want, thier's no time to close the distance.

If you are in California, you will now have to give it up....HA!,,,, NOT!

remington 700 adl in 243, 100 grain soft points. and a shot behind the shoulder puts them down everytime. i also used to use my 22-250 with 55 grain soft points, and that one dropped them in their tracks every time.
