I can’t like your post enough!! I probably have as good of a chance getting struck by lightning as I do getting bit by a snake. But when a rattler starts rattling I instantly start shivering!! Idk why. I used to catch snakes all the time as a kid.
What snake boots do you use? Have you tried many?

All we mainly have is cottonmouths on the properties I hunt and that white mouth stands out even on the darkest nights, lol. Thankfully they’re a docile snake or I would’ve already been struck a dozen or more times.

I have found a .22LR Mini Mag hollowpoint applied to the head settles them right down.

I don’t carry anything but my rifle at night and generally just keep walking.
I won’t kill them except on places they specifically tell me to kill them. Found a good one yesterday when burning. He was slipping out ahead of the fire…he didn’t make it.

Yeah, but how do you get them to hold still long enough for a decent shot?
Have heard around the campfire, pretty sure its an old wives tail, that if you point a rifle at them in close proximity (muzzle to snake), they will align their head and all ya gotta do is pull the trigger. Not gonna get the Mod 60 close enough to try it.........that's a really short barrel and we got some really long snakes.

Got a Ruger Wrangler .22 for Christmas a few years ago and that joker is dead on. Zoom in on the head…
Tried lace ups first but they are slow to put on and everything green down here has thorns that grab the laces and untie them. Finally added a rawhide flap that snapped on to cover laces, but still took too long to put them on.
Switched to Cabela's zipper boots for years but they have been discontinued.
Last pair I bought were from Bass Pro Shop......I believe they are:
RedHead Good boots but a bit tight in the calf for me.

I have used Danner Snake boots. My first pair was lace up. I loved them. I wore those out after 7 years. I then got the Danner Sharptail. I thought I wasn't going to like them because they didn't have laces. But, I like them even more.
Both were great. I typically walk 3-5 miles per coyote hunting trip. I used to live in Hellifornia and hunt the Mojave Desert. I walked up to a lot of snakes. I have since moved to America (Idaho). The boots will be valuable here too. I wear them the minute any part of the day will get above 50 degrees.

Y’all got snakes there?? I’ve hunted Washington, Idaho, and Montana in the Spring for turkeys and never saw snakes. I figured y’all had some but I guess the beauty of the country just outweighed a venomous snake encounter. I’ll average about 9-9.5 miles a day while out there and never saw the first crawler.
I haven't personally seen snakes yet. But, it is winter. I live north of Eagle, ID. I am told a rancher caught over 100 rattlesnakes last year in the area I plan to quail hunt. The Danner Sharptails are so comfortable, I don't mind wearing them at all. Heck, at the very least, I never get any brush or thorns in my boots.

Don't think I haven't thought of that, Mike, especially when I'm knee deep in Sacahuista or Buffle grass and can't see the ground! That's when the shooting sticks come into play.
If you've ever seen a snake ""swimming" across the top of thick grass, it gives you pause. They can really traverse a lot of ground in a hurry. Fortunately the ones I've seen have been going away! It's the ones I don't see that worry me. When on top of thick grass they are pretty close to waist high on a short legged feller like me.
I have a pair of snake chaps but seldom wear them, they're too noisy in the brush.
