favourite cal for coyotes only?

if you are stricly gonna use it for coyote then stick with the 243win the 25-06 is kindof over kill unless you plan on smacking them past 500yrds which i wouldnt reccomend /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
me i use the 220swift and havent had a problem my dad uses the 25wssm for coyotes and my son uses his 222rem mag.

I like the savage 223 with a 55grain hollow point or soft point by remington. The gun is light and accurate. I dont have to shoot a country mile to knock down a yote, but confident that the 223 will get the job done. Im curious what the 40grain would do for the 223.

Like 30-378 said, the 25 is really over kill on yotes. It does have a time and place though. If its windy or the range is over 500 yards, it does have a place.

The advantages are that it will sling a 85g bullet 300fps faster and that results in flatter trajectory, more energy, more retained velocity, and less wind drift. Pretty much kicks it butt all the way around, but a coyote isn't gonna notice the difference. The only disadvantage with the 25-06 I see is burning roughly 10g more powder.

For coyotes/deer I dont think theres a better standard cartridge then the 25-06, but if solely for coyotes the 243 is very very hard to beat.

222 is my favorite and I get paid to kill em.

cjcalls, how did you work that out? Do you mean more than just selling hides? Do you need an assistant?

Used to use a 22-250 and 270 win for yotes. Got a 204 last year and never looked back. 35 and 40 gr bergers make em go bang flop. Insides are like jello. For those really long shots on windy days, I would prefer a 25-06 or a 6mm.
Lookin forward to trying out some new bullets from "wildcat". They are similar to the bergers and you can get them with fairly high bc's compared to the regular manufactured stuff. Richard Graves from wildcat bullets told me he will have 204 bullets available in a month or so. He's over in Wetaskiwin which is about an hour away from me.

I"ve shot Richards bullets in .257" 125g ULD RBBT out of my 25-06. Excellent bullet. I found the BC to be around .520

I"ve also shot the 7mm 175g ULD RBBT out of my 7 RM. Once again excellent bullet. I had him make these a tad different, more to expand at LR, so the BC is not as good as it would be, but still at .550, good enough.

I've also played with the 308" 210g ULD RBBT out of my 300 RUM. Shot that bullet out to 1150 yards on my 15" plate and it was hitting with regularity out of a stock rem 700 LSS.

Bottom line, Richard makes one helluva bullet and he is the nicest guy on earth.

His bullets are designed with LR hunting/targets in mind. They perform equally as well in the field or on the target range.

The original post asked "favorite cal for coyotes only" ?
For me its the 220 swift
Had a 204 sold it
had a 19-223 sold it
for me the 220 swift will handle any coyote around

I have a 7mm short action ultra mag would that be too big of a gun? Should I use my 223? Also with calling coyotes with a hand call what is the best way to call? What sounds should you make ex: waaa wooo help? should it be short burst long burst? and for how long and how long of a break between the calls before you do it again?

Yah I fully realize that....

I already said what my fav. cals were for coyotes.

I was just assuring the above poster before me, that Richard makes one helluva bullet and is one of the nicest guys around. He will be very pleased with his bullets.

whats the best way to call the coyotes using a hand call what kind of sounds and burst for how long.. like short burst of waaa or ouch or what?

Favorite cal for coyotes? The one you shoot the best. As for the 243, or the 25-06, I will shoot the 25-06 over the 243 day in and day out. I call in wide opean country and the shots can be on the tall side. As for over kill there is no such thing unless you are a fur hunter.
