Federal Cartridge & TSS shot...

Federal is now loading TSS turkey loads. Turkey loads ain't coyote loads, but ya never know what may be in the future. It'll be interesting to see how this develops.

GC, I am going to the Shot Show tomorrow and I will go to the Federal booth and talk to them about TSS Coyote loads. To me it looks like TSS #3 or #4 shot would be the perfect sizes for TSS coyote loads.

I think Federal made a mistake with their Heavyweight Coyote BB 3" 12 ga 1-1/2 oz load. With Heavyweight 15g/cc shot, #2 shot works great and gives you 28 more pellets per shell than the Heavyweight BB loads do.

It may not do any good but I am going to talk to some of the ammo manufacturers about making some lead BBB or T shot coyote loads also. It is surprising to me that no ammo manufacturers make a lead load with a shot size between number 4 buck and BB shot.

But TSS #3 or #4 shot will work even better on coyotes. You can't always shoot a coyote in the head.

From KPY Shotshell Ballistic program.

TSS #7 shot at 1300 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 31.3 yards.
TSS #4 shot at 1300 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 78.9 yards.
TSS #3 shot at 1300 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 96.8 yards.

Lead T shot would be cheap and effective which is probably why they don't make it.

37 pellets to an ounce would give you 60 pellets in a 1 5/8 ounce load.

I would have thought that a manufacturer could have overcome the one downfall to TSS.....$cost.
We all like new stuff, and I personally don't have a problem seeing value in a product if it is that much better, but there is a point where it is just too much.

I ran TSS all season this year, didn't use anything else. Killed a few dozen coyotes with it. Some #4 but mostly #2. I wouldn't knowingly try and shoot a coyote at 70 yards with it. I wouldn't even hunt with #7. Wouldn't even consider it.

I can't imagine, and wouldn't want to be there, with the sky blusting in the the duck-goose blinds, pheasant and dove fields when the potential ranges become known to the average idiot. Former "pepperings" could become fatal. Definitely will see an increase in accidentally shooting fatalities in the bird fields.

Looks like these turkey loads are going to cost $38 per five shells. At $7.60 per pop before taxes that's going to make patterning sessions pretty pricey.

I killed a coyote at 62 with 8.5s during turkey season this past spring...

That doesn't make TSS #8-1/2 shot a good choice for coyotes. TSS shot costs the same if it is #7 shot, #2, #3 or #4 shot so why not use the most efficient shot size for coyotes?

TSS #8 shot at 1300 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 17.3 yards.
TSS #4 shot at 1300 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 78.9 yards.
