First set of the evening found me at a small dairy farm that I hunt. Winds were low out of the NW and temperature was 15 degrees. There are 4 pastures divided by a 2 track that shoots up the middle I hugged a patch of brush along the 2 track and set the caller upwind of me about 60 yards. Started with MFK Squeaky Squeaky low and ramped it up over a few minutes. After a few minutes of quiet I let BFA Smooth Talker run through its file and again gave about a minute or two of silence before running BFA Koda And Beans Duo. At about the 15 minute mark I scanned behind me through the brush to pick up a pair slipping in from the west. First time ever from that direction on this farm. I was able to pick up and rotate my tripod 180 degrees and get on them cleanly through a hole in the brush. They must have heard me squeaking and crunching on the snow because they started to retreat back towards the woodline on the west side of the pasture. I gave them a quick woof and one stopped broadside at about 140 yards. The 55 gr NBT from my 243 dropped a heavy female with authority. She flipped and rolled around for a few seconds before lying motionless. Number 2 refused to play anymore to kiyi’s or pup distress. I walked out to pick up my prize and she was quite messy! That little bullet destroyed her pump house to put it mildly! 😧 Parvo strikes again!

NOT PARVO!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG have you NO mercy
Parvo doesn’t discriminate! :devilish:

ALL RIGHT BOB, you got out and shot one too
I did! Coming off a full week of the flu or whatever, I had to get some fresh air. Was out Saturday night and called up one fox before whiteout conditions sent me home. Got this chunk last night on first set. I want to go back and weigh her. Big girl! Had one fox roll in on third set last night. No more coyotes tho. At 11 PM temps dropped to 5 degrees according to truck. Called it a night.

You lulled those coyote into a false sense of security with your absence.
I'm going to try the same approach but without the sickness as it's supposed to be gail winds with subzero temps this week into the weekend.
Great job and glad you and the better half are feeling better.

Appreciate that, Shoots! It was one hell of a week! Still not 100%, but I’ll take heading in the right direction as good enough!

And yes, the weather is garbage for calling! I welcome the cold, but 30-50 mph winds for the next week!… It’s depressing.

Didn’t get back to weigh the coyote. Farmer texted me early the morning after saying they “took care of her” Lol… Guess he saw it lying there and dragged it off to the dumping grounds. He even commented on her size and thanked me for my services.

How’s the fox situation down near you? I can’t believe the fox I’m pulling in this season. Gotta admit that there’s a little piece of me that wants to grab a partner and just go old school with lights and have a fun night just to see what happens! I just can’t bring myself to kill them for no reason. My fur guys don’t want to mess with them.

I see fox frequently in the field and regularly on the trail cams, but only drop them if the landowner requests it.
Most of the time I'm cursing them out because it's been slim pickings on seeing coyote the last couple of weeks and when I spot something coming in it's a let down when it turns out to be a fox.
I'm still going to try and get out and see if I can get access to some of the deer blinds to get cover from the wind, but it's not looking good for predator hunters in NY this week.

I am 100% in agreement with everything you said buddy. I mean I don't mind seeing fox, but I know the feeling you get when you realize it isn't a coyote! Lol...

It sure feels like there aren't the coyote numbers this year. Albeit my time afield has been hampered by lousy weather, deep snow and health issues this season. I still feel like call ins have been fewer than normal for the amount of time spent.

It is brutal here today. It's 14 degrees currently and 25 mph winds. Dropping into single digits this evening and 33 mph gusts. I'll be hanging out inside!

If the forecast is correct, Saturday might be good here.... The temps will be a low of -14 to a high of 5 degrees but the winds will die down around 6 PM. Sunday temps a few degrees warmer... -9 low and 11 high with evening winds topping out around 16 mph. It's gonna be great! :)
