Feral Cat Hunting

Camo

New member
I have a property in North Carolina, and I mainly squirrel and deer hunt there. Lately there have been feral cats everywhere and I have seen many of them eating my squirrels /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif!!! It's legal to shoot them on private land in my county, and was wondering, how do I shoot them, what calls do I use, what gun, etc.

Thanks
Curt

I would use a squeeker, and anything from a .22 up! Don't post the pics ! someone is sure to fuss at you if you do!

A 22 lr works great, you can kill a bunch of em at night if you can get away with using a light, also if you have access to a dog that will chase cats use him to flush em out of the brush.I have hunted wild cats for years down along the missouri River, there are tons of em and they are WILD.

I tried using my German Sheperd and the cat tore him up, but my little beagle is a trooper.

If they have just started showing up, then some youknowwhat might be dumping them in that area. If you catch this numbskull, do something (preferably legal) to get them to never dump cats there again. Good luck.

Camo when you get those thinned out there will be more move in. I live 20 miles from shelby and we have an endless supply of cats. The coyotes get a few and hunters kill some, but theres just to many. You might need to buy a few traps, they work 24/7

Use the same rifle/cartridge as you would for shooting dogs that are running. One guy mentioned the HMR in jest I see, Ive used it quite successfully on farm dogs around here, kills them just like it does a coyote.

You should try to bait them. I know it would work because we can't keep cats out of our garbage. I've have sat out there at night before and shot them with an air rifle.

just throw out a can of sardines and popem as they come to it. my 22 hornet does the job just fine. also my friend has a couple of coon hounds, and we tree them all the time with them.

12 gauge ex-full choke and 3 inch hevi shot should do the trick.

Saddie with a feril cat treed ( yea she's a treen black lab /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif)to bad when it jumped out she went running like a little B&%H /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif At least it was a good photo opp. She was up on the tree but my camera is to slow.

I got one today while deer hunting with my 30.06 although I must admitt it wasn't a bang flop - there was conciderable airtime before it hit the ground.

Funny.. we have the same problem in Ontario with people letting their cats go out in the country. They do more harm then good. Too bad they didn't only catch mice and rats. If you have a live trap.. and a gun lol.. you can do both. There's a few real nasty ones around here... well there was... Bait a trap with just about anything... cat food... old chicken or meat... the farmer I know feeds his barn cats beaver carcass... says cats really love it.. Cats aren't tough to kill... so any gun will do. I like my coon gun at night. My hound doesn't run anything but coons but the odd time you see the eyes on the fence in the middle of nowhere... and play connect the dots.

Ferral cats, [house/farm] in Michigan are considered the number one predator. Taking a huge toll on all the game species we WANT to have around, you name it.
Owners need to realize little kitty on the front porch is real destructive and understand why I for one regularly minus as many as posible.

city boy here (forced to live in town by liberal socialistic mayor and cronies....Im a BETTER fireman because i live in town...LOL)
anyway, cats bust my wifes birdfeeder pretty hard at times.
so i throw a live trap under my deck in back.

Feral cats w/o ID are handled in an appropriate fashion.

Ive caught two that had ID.

I return them and explain that their cat has used up all nine of his lives should he ever come to my house again.
One owner got a case of the [beeep], but I explained to her that she needs to mind her manners and realize that her cat is being returned not through any doing of hers but only because I was giving the two of them a break.
So she calls the cops....who explain that I was within my rights to trap her cat and also I could have turned said cat into animal control.
Next time said cat wont fare so well.

I also live in the middle of town. My wife has one of those backyards that looks like a picture out of a garden magazine.Any how because of this the local cat population was constantly hanging out and being a big nuisance.I tried traps, repellant, even throwing rocks(like that helped).Nothing worked till I got a Drozd full auto BB gun.
A couple six shoot bursts and the cat NEVER comes back. Not as much fun as coyotes but a close second.

I popped one last summer with my 10/22 @60yrds, just opened the slider done deal. I've got a new one on the prowl now, and wanted to pop him with my hornet but the women folk were home and gave me the thumbs down. His days are numbered. We just got a fresh snow, I plan to stalk him with my BPS and some #2s or BBBs and improved choke tube.
