Thinking about ordering a filson timber mackinaw hunting coat for elk hunting in the pacific northwest. Since I cant find any reviews on the product online, I was wondering if it would be too heavy or hot to hunt in the hilly areas I hunt...Please advise thanks!

Filson product's are outstanding, i've owned-own-several of their product's.

Yes Filson is mighty expensive,i'd own even more if i could afford it.That being said their product's are certainly worth every dollar spent.

I would buy it & don't look back /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I hump the brush doing alot of up and down in steep terain.I know they make excellent products but at 4lb 4oz is it going to be too much coat?

Yes the cruiser is a "tad" heavy but not to much,Joe i assume you're talking about the single sleeved cruiser ? the double cruiser is pretty heavy. i usually wear my cruiser when temp's are in the 30's or less,i just un-button mine as i warm up. Idaho is probably a drier cold than Oregon, unless you're in the eastern part of the state.if you're on the damp clammy side i'm sure the cruiser would work fine.Wool seem's to moderate itself as far as controlling body temp's.

It is the single mackinaw and I do live on the wet side...You convinced me THANKS!

Joe if you're married just don't throw me under the bus for talking you into it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I grew up on the "wet side" of Oregon, just north of Eugene,I remember walking to school on those "dank-clammy" day's.I just wish i had a Filson back then /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There's certainly something to be said for a "wet" cold.

As others have stated...can't go wrong with Filson. I own 2 of their coats and a pair of their wool pants.

I have the exact coat you are looking at, and I love it for cold weather. Like Dave said when it gets below 30.

I'm 5' 8" and weigh 165 lbs, so when I first put it on, it feels heavy, but at my first stand I'm glad I have it on. After that I have forgotten about the weight. It fits well and is very comfortable to wear all day.

JMO...hope this helps

My grandad bought a Filson cruiser in the late 1940s or early 1950s as far as I can tell based on photos. He wore it for 40 more years.

I inherited it and hunted out of it for a number of years before I outgrew it in the shoulders/arms.

My wife will wear my grandads Filson red and plaid cruiser next month on a buffalo shoot in Montana.

If you figure your grandkids may be wearing it 60 years after you bought it, you may consider it a bargain.

That's something! I had to chuckle at your post...I inherited one from my Grampa, and I too wore it until I outgrew it! I think he got it when he returned from WWII. (Judging from the cars in the pictures). I had to get the button holes re-sewed when I started wearing it, and again for my son to wear it, but he has outgrown it and now it's back in the closet waiting for the "next generation". Can't bear to get rid of it now, heck it's pretty much a family heirloom! I live/hunt just north of you around Castle Rock, WA. We hunt elk out behind the house or up by Mt. Adams. Yep, it's a bit warm sometimes, but still going strong, (try to make a new top of the line Gore-Tex coat last 60+ years!) There is only one Filson.

My Filson Vest is one of the best outdoor clothes I have, thin but flippin warm... I wanna another...

Oh yeah, Filson is spendy, but you can find it on clearance in the spring.....

I have a filson tincloth packer coat that I love for hunting in the thick stuff around home. I also have a pair of double tin pants & double tin chaps that I wear. You cannot beat there quality as far as i'm concerned. Yes it will cost you more up front, but it will out last you.

i own a vest and liner and duster and they are great order them once and be done. the only other wool i like better is king of the mountain. Both are great products!

I bought my first Single Mackinaw Cruiser @ Soderbergs commissary in Kake about19 85 for 82 dollars . I wore that one out and got the 2nd in Sitka for 156 dollars , it didn,t last as long as the first .... Tin Pants don,t last anything like they used to , but they still are the only thing that will pretty much keep you dry , not sweat you too much and is totally Devils Club proof ... ,. Too noisey for most hunting tho ... For really gettin around in the brush a Wollrich Halibut jacket is a bit better , but the Cruiser is warmer and doesn,t catch the brush as bad ... I,m a timber faller from Southeast ......
