Finally, a javelina

Yeah, I've let a couple things go unmounted, but this is my first real "shoulda, coulda, woulda" on game. To be honest, I really didn't know what I had. Oh well, now I have something to strive for! Beat this sucker, with a bow, and get him mounted!

Harvey, sounds like the kids get a kick out that! Have you ever had them get nasty with you or other animals? I've heard they can get pretty agressive. After calling this guy in and seeing the way his hackles were all raised up lookin' for a fight, I believe it. Just wonder what your experiences are with that.

I hear ya Cactus Rat (now that sounds rodent like /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif).

If "a pain in the butt" is a characteristic, then I know several rodents. Might even be related to a few /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

When I was a kid we had a farmer/rancher that would pay us $.50 per each and he would furnish the ammo for us to use.

I don't know if they are as destructive as feral hogs, but in Texas javalina are considered game animals, and you are only allowed 2 per year.

DesertRam - you said you called him in. What type of call were you using? I might have to try that the next time I'm in Laredo or somewhere where they have javalina.

I have called them in with a predator call dozens of times. They always come in angry. The first time that it happened I looked up and a huge boar was racing right for me about ten feet away or so. I dropped the call picked up my revolver and almost touched him as it fired! I am certain that my shot was the quickest I will ever make. He veered left jumping over my legs and ran about 50 yds and died. It weighed 55 lbs field dressed. It scared me so bad that I never predator called for several years afterwards.

YellowHammer – That was 40 plus years ago. Heck, we were still using stagecoaches to get between Phoenix and Dallas back then. Now a days Javelina are also game animals in Arizona and you are allowed 1 a year – if you can get drawn.

We call them in all the time with predator calls. During the Globe Hunt I called in a group of 7 with a cottontail distress and another group of 5 the next day with a tweety. For some reason when I do call them in it is usually close to the rocky foot hills. I don’t remember ever calling them in on the flat desert.

I'm terrible at guessing weight, but I would guess him at 55 pounds. He felt heavier, but I always knock about 15% or so off my initial impression to be conservative.

Here is a pic from Mexico last month. Check out the little guy. Was also my son's first hunt. Enjoy,

Dave

What a cool mount!!

Better not show my ten year old son though. He shot his first critter (A Javalina) in mexico last month while I was deer hunting. He made a perfect shot at about eighty yards with a Rem.7mm mag, Jewel trigger and ported. The knot on the critter was the exit wound.

They would not allow us to bring it back over the border. He was heart broken. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I guess they had just stopped allowing them across. Deer no problem. The airline almost did not let him take the empty shell casing with him (Keepsake), after he started crying by the metal detector they let it go. C'mon it was an empty!

Anyway we got lots of pics and a video. I guess that will have to do, Dave

Don't know why it took you so long to find him DesertRam.I've been in the Silver City area now for less than two weeks and I've seen two already. Both roadkill! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

DesertRam,
That's a nice one for sure. If it makes you feel any better, you probably wouldn't have been happy with a mount after a head shot anyway. At least you've got the pics!

I weighed this one on a bathroom scale after I got home the next day at 34 pounds. About average for around here. Ranged @ 204 yds after the shot and as you can see by the notch behind her ears, I almost missed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

"I almost missed." I like that! Nice lookin' piggie there for sure. I've considered putting in the draw for Az next year. I had such a good time calling the one I got that I bought a bow and want to use it for them next year. Another chance (Az hunt) would make the bow purchase a better idea, right? Any tips on areas to hunt over there?
