Hadn't been out hunting song dogs in a few years, and bought a new AR15 just for them a bit over a month ago. Got it set up and sighted in, and finally had the time last night to get out on a prime piece of real estate.
We baited them with some old expired lunch meats and the like from my work, set up about 120 yards away behind/atop a nice dirt mound. We were backed by a small stand of thick brush, so no skyline directly behind our silhouettes. I had the AR15 and sidearm, my buddy manned my Mossberg 500.
Sun finally started dropping, the yotes started howling and chattering back and forth. I hit the rabbit in distress several times in series and we'd wait.
The only sightings I had were several sets of eyes through my Redfield 2-7, off in the trees. We did have a monster buck run up on us, closing within 20 yards, snorting and stomping at us.
All in all, it was a bust; but any time you get to spend in God's outdoors with a buddy and no interruptions...is golden.
