Alright lady's and gent's

I went yote hunting the whole day... Didn't get anything.

But I hunted an area that's very isolated, and there's a large swamp/pond, and a mix of pine forest and hardwoods. It looks like Canada in some spots. A few weeks ago i spotted a cougar running past at about 400 yards at the same spot. I was sure it was a cougar. No one believed me though. People spotted them in the area near this spot I was hunting.

Anyways half way though calling something caught my eye. It ran before i could see it, but it sounded big.

I walked out on the ice where I heard it and saw this.

Please tell me these are the tracks i was looking for.

It looks like there was a yote track crossing it from before. But the fresh tracks didnt have claw marks, and the tail drag line was also fresh.

Any ideas?

I hope its my cougar

You need a closer pic of the tracks themselves in order to tell.

But looking at it, the tracks are a tad small for a lion, & it shouldn't be dragging it's tail through shallow snow.
I'd venture to say that it's not a lion.

Keep looking though!

Ya that does not look like the drag of a lions tail. I have seen were lion tails have hit in deep snow but I have never seen them drag it like that. I think they coyote was carrying a stick that was dragging or it was a domestic dog with clipped claws dragging a stick.

Bryan8, I did not mean any disrespect form my post, It is just really hard to see what is going on in the picture. If they are lion tracks the "tail drag" would have been caused most likely by the leg on and animal the lion was carrying. They do not drag their tails normally, especially in the little amount of snow in the picture.

I would love it if you found lion tracks in New York State!

Can you go back tomorrow and get a better photo. Did you follow the tracks very far?

people need to learn to take pics up close and personal, and use something of known size( a dollar bill, a shotgun shell, lens cap) next to it so that you can determine size

I'll get better pictures tmw if I get a chance it's like 10 miles into the woods so it's kinda a long ride on the quad in this cold weather.

And waterweasel, don't get your pantys in a bunch. We were on the quad so I snaped a pic and keep rideing to our next stand. I'll get better pics to please you.

I'm pretty sure it's not a domestic dog, no houses around for miles and miles. Mabey a yote draging a deer leg or something, i'll hopefully find out tmw.

no panties in a bunch, just tired of seeing pics of assumed cougar tracks where the pic evidence isnt worth the film they were taken with, even if you were on a quad, it would have taken you what, another minute or two to get GOOD pics to attempt to prove your point,

he said the tracks didnt show claw marks, that means it couldnt have been a dog. i might be wrong, but i always thaught dogs always walked with claws out and cats with them tucked in.

There are cougars around here ya know, they have been spoted in south apalachin which is were I hunt. One was harrassing a friends cattle and it was traped and taken by the dec.

That's what I was thinking.

It's not the first time I've seen these tracks. I'd like to set up a game cam over a bait pile.... Anyone want to loan out a trail cam? Hahaha

are there? theres ZERO definite evidence, LOTS of " sightings" not one, well one in where was it, the keene valley, I think it was, yet there hasnt been a proven cougar in NY in ages, just NO solid evidence, blurry pics, melted out tracks\. right there arent hogs in NY, cept for those pesky ones that escaped a game farm

the DEC did NOT release cougars, years ago there was a group that wanted to release elk back into the state, the amount of public meetings and environmental inpact surveys that had to be done were tremendous, and guess what, NO elk, for the state to release a potentioally dangerous thing like cougars is insane, think about it, someone gets attacked, and somehow during investigation its proven that the state just released them, the lawsuits would be never ending,

not that I dont totally think they arent here, theres just ZERO evidence that they are, [beeep] I have close friends that say theyve seeen em too, including myself that saw something years ago in sullivan county, that to this day I cant explain, yet its not PROOF. and when I was in school, or working as a field biologist, we had to show proof of things for the work to be taken seriously

with all the game cams out there, you dont think ONE pic would have surfaced yet with a cougar, I found a dead bobcat a few months ago in westchester county along a highway, and about two weeks later had a sportsshop owner telling me that two of his other clients had found a dead cougar kitten, right where I found the bobcat, so these apparent sportsment didnt know the differnce while staring at a carcass at there feet

I cropped and enlarged the original photo at the top.
It isn't the best resolution, but you can make out the tracks somewhat.
They appear to be kinda oval shaped as opposed to round.
The cat tracks I've seen tend to be as wide as they are long.
Also, comparing to the hand and the boot, they don't look to be that large, maybe 1-1/2" across, or so.

You guys be the judge.

Not much of a left/right spread to the tracks. I'm not an expert, but it would have to be a youngin to be that narrow in the chest.

Whatever it is, I'd say it's male, short legs and a big johnson

I'd stay away from him, bound to be grumpy from dragging in the snow.
