Finally on the board!
Went out yesterday afternoon and decided to start at the pits (same place I posted about earlier regarding best way to hunt it)! First stand was way off to the right of the property. Since this property was new to me I didn't even know I had permission to be on this one field so I never ventured there until yesterday. It's a beautiful spot with a long slope down to a ravine, lined with hardwoods. Nothing showed so I was about to leave when I remembered @Infidel 762 suggesting in that same post that the place was big enough to do two sets on I thought I'd give the other end a try.
I went back to the middle where I made that stand last week, the one where I got busted by the coyote at long distance due to bad wind direction, this time the wind was good. I started off with a dying rabbit on low volume and ramped it up slowly then back down as per a discussion I had with @fratri in a pm. After a few minutes I sat quiet. Next call was a female invitational howl for which I never got a vocal response but I saw a coyote move, down in the same area as last time so I immediately went back to the dying rabbit on low. The coyote popped out to take a look and started my way but got distracted a few times so I ramped up the call for a second or two to keep it interested. It made it's way across the ice and stopped at the bottom of the hill. I left the caller going and it moved down a bit before coming up over the hill only showing it's ears. Eventually it committed and started on a lope right toward me. I capped it at 60 yards. Oddly enough it never tried to get down wind at all, in fact it came directly from the upwind position all the way to me.
Anyway, glad to be back track, I was beginning to think I would be better off taking up knitting!
