Finish for Boyds laminated stock?

A friend of mine just purchased a new laminated stock and asked me to finish it for him. Boyds' web site suggested spray on polyurethane, but I was thinking about an oil finish. Brownells has an epoxy stock finish that looks promising. Any suggestions?

Any finish that you'd put on a wood stock will work on a laminated. Tru-oil is an old favorite, but Brownell's has several that will work well. If you do use a polyurethane finish you can always cut it with fine steel wool to simulate an oil finish.

Keep in mind that a laminated stock has lots of epoxy already built in so about any finish you apply will be more closely akin to an on the wood finish than an in the wood oil finish as applied to an all wood stock. Boyd's gave you good advice.

i went with a aerasol polyurethane made by miwax and it is drop dead gorgeous! a friend of mine is trying to get me to refinish his 10/22 fajen custom stock for him b/c the finish on my stock looks so good. I recently took the gun to a gun smith for re-crown and he was highly interested in who did the stock and what they used, I said me from start to finish and was even more suprised when i told him what i used. good luck.

I have used Tru-oil with great results, but lots of work and a Tung oil that was even harder with ok results. I will try some poly next time. If you want to stain I suggest a waterbase since they penetrate laminates much better than say minwax type stains.

I used Minwax water-based stain on a Fajen laminate and it did a beautiful job. It gave a nice, even penetration of the wood and was about as easy a job as any stock I've ever done. I used Hunter Green on a "coffee" (brown and black) stock and it came out as a great camo job. Any oil finish over that and it's weatherproof, I'd use Lin-Speed, personally, since I've had such good luck with it on wood stocks.
Polyurethane doesn't hold up well it the wet conditions, from what I've seen. I hunt in a swamp, though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Wet sand the stock good to de-hair and then finish with 6 to 8 coats of Tru-Oil and then spray with a couple of coats of clear polyurethane. After it drys for about 24 hours either leave with high shine or rub down with 0000 steel wool for a matte finish. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
