First Coydog

I've often wondered about the infamous "tooth fairy". She ripped me off on my last tooth, I put under my pillow /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif.

Mike,

What is the difference in the coydog & dog-ote. As far as chromosome pattern's?

I'm under the impression/belief. That in the "wild" if/when a dog & coyote breed. It's a male dog with a receptive female coyote[perhaps, a lack of mature male coyote's in the area]. Rather than vice/versa. what do [you] figure are the odds of either set-up? This rare animal has always intrigued me. Thanks!

Kirby, the genetic makeup is the same. When a dog breeds a female coyote, the y chromosome comes from the dog, vica versa the other way around. By doing DNA analysis, one can figure this out. I don't think it's possible to tell by looking at them. I may be wrong though as I've never seen an example of both side by side.

Literature states it is much more common for a male coyote to breed a receptive female dog (coy-dog) than a male dog breeding a coyote (dog-yote).

Either way, it's not as common as most folks think.

Further explanation of my belief;

Iowa has had & still does have, plenty of feral dogs. A female coyote in heat. I believe would be "more" approachable from a male feral dog suiter. As compared to a prospective male coyote suiter, approaching a female dog in heat.

Dogs don't typically dig a den ie;[hole in the ground]. Although, I know of one litter. That has used a field drive culvert, to raise her pups.

Feral dogs are typically detested as much or more than even coyote. As they are well versed in being overly aggressive[especially in a pack or pr] to livestock & people. Farmers & everyone & their brother, [hunters]included. Shoot them often, when they are seen. The ole, [SSS]method.

A female coyote, with dog sired pups. Are IMO, more likely to get some, if not most of her pups, past the weened stage. While tending to her pup's alone.

10-4, Mike.

Interesting, as to "why" those folks say. More likely a male coyote & female dog X. Regardless, pretty rare. Thanks, for the info.

I have a friend that has a coydog. I know the owner of the female and we were both there when the dam and sire got hung up about 2 am. The coyote had a severe case of lead poisoning after the water hose broke up the happy couple. Now my friends prize Border collie (only a prize to him) had pups about 60 days later. My other friend got one of the pups just cause. There is no doubt they are half coyote the only other canine anywhere near that HOUSE dog was mine. If mine bred her we would be extremly wealthy from the gay community as she is also a female. The next trip I take to Texas I will get some pics of I guess the first 100% proven coydog. I saw the yote and know the dam very well. I also don't believe in immaculate conception in anything other than the biblical Mary.

I have never seen one in the field (that I know of), but I'll guarantee they are possible. The tire man in our town took a coyote pup from a den and raised it as a pet. He (the coyote, not Calvin, LOL) bred to a female mutt they had at least once that I know of (Calvin was trying to give away the pups).

The coyote wasn't a bad "pet". He wouldn't stay home (though he always came back), but he was friendly enough, and even played nice with a pet PD they also had. Much closer to a domestic dog tempermentally, than the couple of wolves I've seen as "pets".

I have never seen on out hunting, but driving around glendale Ca I saw a guy with a beagle or basset hound. The head on this dog looked straight off a coyote, without a doubt. It was kink of funny.

I have seen & killed a few over the years. But only a few.

My daughter-in-law's mother has a female wolf/dog mix that she treats just like a pet dog. [the sire was 100% wolf/b*tch was 100% German Sheperd]
This "thing" is the size of a Sheperd, but looks like a blond wolf. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
To people, and /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gifcats, she is very friendly. But to other canids, she is 100% fight.
