first hog with a bow

sitting 12' off the ground hog is 17 yards away. had a carbon arrow break on a spike the other day, a friend said he puts a carbon inside a Alum shaft and adds 75gr field point inside toped off with a 125 gr 2blade broad head and works great on hogs so I had to give it a try, only shooting a 50#

we also talked about putting a laser on the bow, for the hogs that show up after dark, legal for hogs in Texas, so I did that as well and co-witnessed with the sights.

the laser dot is on the tree at his head level, let him turn a little more broad side before I put it about 1/2 way up, and an inch or 2 behind the shoulder. could see the laser fine with the sights. good hit looked deep not through but 9" or so.

gave him 30 then looked while I still had light, found the arrow 50 yards away 125 gr magnus stinger with bleeders stayed in him had a good blood trail for another 200 yards. bringing the pup back at first light it should be a good easy track for her.

wish her and me luck

go get him, show us them close ups with a big ole grin

side note, half way up is too high to aim with a bow, hogs are really bad to duck just like a deer. I aim 1/4 up and sometimes cheat even lower if the hog looks jittery

weekender,

thanks for the tip, he never saw or herd it coming, he did flinch a few times when I took the pics with the cell phone, it got him to turn a little more broadside

which diagram is correct one has lungs up high the other low in the chest? I think it is very hard to tell unless inflated? next head shot I will look for appropriate shot placement

ready for the hunt.

picked up the trail again

jumped a sounder of hogs maybe 6 bedded down dog was off after fresh meat, took a while to get her back on the trail

280 yards from POI last drop of blood found and we jump another live hog. circled looking for more sign as she is winding more now, she got on something and was a good 65 yards ahead on point (GPS) stayed on it fro a good 3-4 minutes while I approached, then she started moving, jumps another hog and bays this one I can tell by her bark its alive, I run up pistol in hand and its not my hog, juat about to put one in its head at 10 yards when if bolted for the thick stuff with dog hot on its Azz,

kept searching but the dog was no good for the trail and was hunting live hog now, I guess a common mistake for a young dog in a target rich environment, hate to correct her when she is on one, it maybe the right one? I guess she needs more experience and I need a bigger bow 50# just is not enough

unlike a deer this hog never bedded down at all, just kept moving, I figure most animals to bed down within 300 yards

I'll keep that In mind, going to take one with the 1873 Springfield Trapdoor (orig) if I can figure out how to mount a laser without altering it, LOL
