First sets of the NY season

I got in 2 sets to start the NY season off. I scored a nice adult female on my very first setup of the year. Small dairy farm close to home. This place has 4 separate pastures that get rotated throughout the year. Well the cows were all in the NW pasture, so I hiked up the middle of the NE pasture to a known rise where I could shoot into 3 of the 4 that didn’t have cows. Winds were light but steady SW. it was about the time I got to where I wanted to be that I realized I had left my e-caller in the truck! Lol… Well I wasn’t about to go get it as I was already a sweaty puddle from the hike in. I started with Kerry Carver’s “Runted Rabbit” pretty softly for 30 seconds or so and scanned. Gave it a minute and got a little more aggressive with it and a pair popped up over another rise in the SW pasture. I stayed quiet and they dropped back into some brush. I again hit the runted and they again emerged over the small rise and again stood there facing me. Well, I figured I only have so many chances, so I lined up on the left one between the shoulders and let one go. I heard the meat report and it crumpled DRT. The second departed and would not return to my Kiyi’s on a different open reed howler. 204 yards per OnX hunt. Perfect way to start the season off. I knew The Runted Rabbit was going to be a solid performer!

Second set was uneventful except for about 17 deer that feeding until I let out some howls on the old FoxPro. The winds switched to SE and it started raining. I called it a night. Gotta work in the AM so it’s all good. Hoping the weekend weather cooperates.

Thanks fellas! It all worked out on the first set. Hand calls saved the hunt for sure. Warm temps and insane humidity were trying to ruin it as well. The eyepiece on my thermal scanner kept fogging up from my sweaty face! Luckily I could still see a fuzzy heat signature! Lol… Second set went downhill with the wind shift and rain. It’s been raining on and off all day today but supposed to clear up. Hoping to hit more spots tonight.

Well Bob, 200yds for the first shot of the year. Great way to get started-and no 'lectronics' to boot! Though that just means you had a brain fart at the vehicle:ROFLMAO:. Congrats buddy, I know it has been a long wait since March.

Definitely had a brain fart! After 6 months off I need to work back into my routine! I’m really not looking forward to what I’ll be forgetting when I’m your age, Mike! 😂

It was a poke, but I don’t think I could have got them closer judging by how they were acting and the wind direction. If they were to try and get downwind it would have put them in with the cows. Smoke em if you got em situation!

Nice going Bob, way to get off to a good start. I went out also but it fast turned into a shake the rust off venture. At least all my batteries were charged. But I had to re-learn routines and remember what not to forget to bring also after not using anything all summer. Something about hunting in short sleeve T shirt just doesn’t feel quite right either.

Well, Don, I think I’m one and done on the re-learning curve! I have pulled off 6 sets fully equipped since the first hiccup! Although It would seem that the coyotes have forgotten how good I am at calling them in! 😐

Just the beginning of the season Mr Bob.
Wile E. Coyote has plenty of time to string us along, just hope the weather is better than last season.

I sure hope it’s better, Steve! I’ve had a lifetime of NY winters that have thrown me some misery at times. But the last couple years have been brutal! I don’t mind snow under most circumstances, but when it’s 18-24+ inches deep and doesn’t melt until the season is almost over it puts a real kink in my fun time! Fingers crossed buddy! Hope you get out and crush them this season!

I hear you Mr Bob.
My buddy and I went out last night for the first time this season.
Knocking on wood, but we had no equipment or brain fart issues.
Heard two separate packs, but no takers.
Because of my knee, dense foliage and the bright moon we couldn't close the gap on a couple of the closer loud mouths.
I'm not pushing it out of the gate, as there's plenty of season left to get the drop on them.
Supposed to be some cloud cover tonight.
Good luck to you as well.
SJC
