i was on the game commision site and there was an article pertaining to the reintroduction of fishers, i hope soon enough when ther numbers are high and i learn how to trap i could trap them. anyone see one yet? a friend said they will respond to a predator call.

Hey Foxpro, as a NH native I can tell you that we traded fishers to you boys in PA in return for turkeys. The turkeys here are doing great, thank you. As for the fishers you guys should be seeing soon, I have extensive practice in trapping them. The first thing I can tell you is that they travel a "LOOP" t when they are hunting that may take them a few days to travel when they are hunting. In NH we only have the month of Dec. to trap them. I have had excellent luck believe it or not trapping them with a large live trap and a can of tuna fish.

Hey Foxpro, you have them right in your backyard. I've seen two so far. One was sent trailing a rabbit, they went right under my treestand in archery season a couple years ago. This was right off of greentown road. These critters arn't afraid to travel aways so its hard to say where one might turn up at. The second one I saw was over close to the Delaware river near Lakawaxen. I was comeing back from Turkey hunting on the New York side of the river last spring and it ran across the road in front of me. There was just a write up in the outdoor page of our local paper last Sunday on Fishers. It seems according to the paper they will eat rabbits, squirrels, even porkipines, and stuff that is already dead. Have you been trying any fawn bleats for yote hunting since the fawns have dropped ? My brother and I were just talking about it tonight. Have a good one.

really? i would really like to see one. you should report it to the commision about the sightings. anyway, i been hunting the coyotes hard lateley, but havent seen many, only 2. one was at night and the other was on saturday. what i wanna do is go down shiny mountain road to were that big tower is. if you walk back there a ways theres a huge clearing. i shot my first fox there when i was 14. anyway, the clearing is pretty big, i wanna put a fawn decoy in the middle and use a fawn bleat, also on the other side of the road is pretty good. alot of deer back there though, so youll probably call in some does. but walk that way over that big hill, and if memory serves correct, theres sort of like a "bowl". but is clear there so yu can see pretty far. good hunting

Foxpro,i am on the PGC web site all the time checking up on "new" news.

The fishers did not die off.22 were released 9 years ago_Overall 190 have been released between the years of 1994 and 1998.The article you are pertaining to reads "Fishers reclaiming the commonwealth" This news release is about how well the fishers are doing in PA now, since 1994-1998. It is not about releasing new fishers in 2003.

Did you actually take the time to read the whole article?

Since we are kinda on the subject. You posted on another thread about the PGC denying that elk were not around in the state until 1999,and that it was fact that there are 100's of wolves and Mnt. lions around the state. Please go to the PGC web site and read up on all the PA elk information, and enlighten yourself.

As for the wolves and Mnt. lions.I consider myself fairly knowledgable on PA predators."THERE ARE NOT 100'S OF MNT. LIONS OR WOLVES ROAMING PENNSYLVANIA AT THIS DAY AND AGE". There are some escaped mnt. lion pets running around somewhere in PA.The big question though is,"Is there a breeding population of mnt.lions that exist"? That is a debate that is always going on with the hunters of PA.

As for the wolves,i doubt there is even "one" of them running around. If there is a slight chance there is,i would say an escaped pet also. Then where back to the big question. Is there a wild breeding population of wolves? I very highly doubt it!

Foxpro, any facts on the mnt. lions and wolves? Just curious.

I had one nearly run across my boot while turkey hunting in Bradford County. It must have been shortly after they released the first bunch, if my memory is correct I would have to say it was 94-95. Only one I have ever seen alive in the woods, although this past winter I have seen several dead along the road.

I have seen 6 Fishers in the last 2 years here in NH.I also saw a dead one yesturday in the road on the way to work.We have two that live near the camp that I work at.They are mean little buggers.

We have been cursed with fishers here in eastern MA for a long time. I can't imagine why anyone would purposely try to populate an area with them. They are mean and fearless. They also beat the crap out of domestic poultry. I suspect they would take lambs, too, as they have been known to take full grown deer. They are small, but evil.
The only good thing is they are relatively easy to trap in a live trap, which is all we can use here.

we have a "breeding population" of fishers here. being a hardcore turkey hunter, i have no use for the varmits. they are resentless in they're pursuit to devour anything they can. i have witnessed them harassing turkeys on the roost before, crafty climbers ! years ago their hides would fetch $300, many people pursued them. now with trapping being so unprofitable, the population of these critters is growing.

I live in Maine where there are plenty of fishers, as well as marten. I very highly doubt that a fisher would take down a full grown deer. They are mean sons of guns, but that is rediculous. There is too much other food around for them to bother with deer, unless its a dead carcass. They will eat carion, but prefer squirrels, rabbits, grouse, etc. They are immune to infection if porqupine quills get in them, and can flip and kill one. Porqupine makes very good bait. Their "loop" can be quite large, and if one comes through it could be 5 or 6 days before it comes back again.

I have often seen fisher tracks following rabbit tracks, but never on a deer track.

I live in Western NY & they are not in my area. It would be nice to see some of the animals that were once here to start showing up again.

We are also cursed with these things in Wisconsin. They were reintroduced many years ago to help get rid of the porcupines. They did a great job on those, hardly ever see porcupines in the woods anymore. The problem started when they ran low on porcupines, they started putting the hammer to everything else. They are mean and fearless, I have a pair of logging pants to prove it. Twice now they have decided I was fair game. One logger friend of mine said if these things ever got to 70lbs he would never go into the woods again. Yes they will go after a deer, working in the woods we have seen first hand what they will go after. I agree, why ould anyone want these things reintroduced on purpose? Sounds like your Dept of Natural Resources is almost as dumb as ours (WI). I didnt think that was possible.

I've seen several in Potter County, PA, up outside of keating summit; including what was left of one after the yotes got ahold of it. Fisher re-introduction was done, to the best of my knowledge, to hammer the overabundant porcupine population.
