Flir PS32 can be upgraded to X3 optical zoom?

Hi peoples! Its my first pots here. I`m a possesor of Flir Scout PS32. Have you heard about the upgrading of the lens of this item? I have read someones post about adding an extra lens.

I had talked to engineer at Torrey Pines Logic about 6 months back, and was told that a lens could be made, for under 1500.00. The ps32 would need to be sent in to them to make the adapter for the unit and make sure the focal length is setup properly. I decided to spend the cash on a thermal rifle scope with a 75mm lens.
 
I can appreciate the price, but I would have to make the same decision. I would spend the extra on a scope. Since it is possible to do this, I wonder why Flir doesn't offer a different model with this feature.
 
They do offer various different models with the extended lens options and much more.

Investing that kind of money in a PS32 handheld scanner is not a very good cost effective idea.

Why would you want to spend that kind of money on a PS32 to begin with?

Instead of looking at the PS series thermal handscanners, you need to look at the TS series thermal handscanners.

I agree that investing that much money is not too cost effective, but looking at the specs for for the TS series, I don't see any option there for 3x. Did I miss something. I have followed a lot of your articles Skypup, and I really appreciate all the posting you've done. I've learned a lot from it. I've noticed that you use the PS32 yourself and if you're just scanning for game, isn't that enough? I use the 2x digital zoom on mine a lot, and sometimes it would be nice to see a bigger image. I wouldn't want to break the thermal bank to get it though.
 
The TS32 Pro and TS32ProR Series has a couple of larger lens extenders up to 60mm, including a 2X extender lens, in addition they have photograph and video capabilities for which they were specifically designed for.

I have used these but have found them to be too powerful for my personal use as the decreased FOV required for the increased magnification really destroys the use of the instruments for my hunting use, plus it is difficult to hold them still at higher magnifications without a portable tripod for viewing or filming video.

A lens extender on a PS-32 would not be a good idea as the decrease in FOV and resolution at 4X would not be worth it. It is not designed to be used with a larger lens.

If you want a handheld scanner with longer range similar to the PS32 series, the LS-64 would be what you would be looking at.

I have both the LS-64 and the PS-32, as well as the M-18 for hand scanners and use all of them all them time.
 
Skypup, I appreciate all the references. You are a good source of information and I am glad you are so willing to share it. If I had that many options to use, I would be misplacing too many of them. Because of that, I have to comply to the Kiss principle, which I am sure you are aware of.
