FLIR scout ps24 thermal

I had a FLIR PS32 on preorder last summer and had it in my hand last Sept. I have used the heck out of it all fall dozens of 4-8 hour calling trips never ran the battery dead in the field but almost did once on a all night trip. For detecting critters it is far better than my PVS-14. For seeing detail it's not great at the clarity is not sharp detail wise much past 50-75 yards. That said I can tell a deer, pig, coyote, person, and so on 200+ yards 90% accuracy just looking at shape and the way the critter moves. I mainly consider the PS32 a detector for anything living I can scan a field in seconds and know everything alive even beeded critters in high grass you would miss with gen 3 night vision. The PS32 will spot deer/hog size game out past 400+ yards you will not get much detail at that range other than seeing a glowing critter out there feeding in a field. For calling predators the PS32 is a great tool to scan with and spot incoming game then use a NV scope or light for the shot. If you are expecting to look out there at 75 yards and count fingers on a man you will be disappointed you will need gen 3 night vision for that type of image sharpness or clarity. A few things I have learn is thermal works in daylight but not as well do to the sun warm objects up giving you more false signals,humid/light rain/fog the thermal sees right through but it lowers the clarity the image looks more washed out but still super cool being able to see right through a thick blanket of fog that shuts my gen 3 night vision down.FOV is very important for calling while thermal systems with high Mag XXX are great for viewing longer ranges the bigger FOV makes short work of scanning alot of area and better up close.

I got up the other morning @ 4 am and was going to try a stand or two before work walked out the door to a heavey cold fog I could not see the house at 50 yards with or without the thermal, Ill try it again.

it is neat to see how many rabbits are in the pasture I'm calling before i call.

I think you could helmet mount one, using the 1/4x20 tripod mount on it, it would be upside down but your pic would be right side up the only thing upside down would be your on screen menue, not a biggie as they are symbels.

I don't like the weight of a helmet while hunting, I ride a bike all day, I guess a skate board helmet might work ok and allow a good cheek weld while making the shot.

I did get a chance to look side by side through a high dollar thermal last night the guy paid 10k for it and it was 640x720 with dig mag in 1x-2x-3x-4x, yes it was shaper than my ps32, you could tell the difference between a horse & cow at 300 yards was it 7k better? NO WAY

I haven't really thought about it mainly do the the 9hz refresh rate on the PS32 would skip alittle if you pan/scan accross the FOV fast.I can try it later I have the Standard Rhino/J-Arm helmet at the house and also two three different commerical soft style head/fask mask that might work. One issue I see happening is unlike a PVS-14 where your FOV is round the Thermals have a Sq image inside so when you head mount a thermal you could get that crooked look to your viewing screen plus it will be upside down as far as the display writing 2x,FLIR,and so on like stated a few post up. I wore my PVS-14 helmet mounted all last weekend out stomping around several miles a night and hung the PS32 around my neck. I could flip the 14 in up postion and then scan with the PS32 or just hold up the PS32 to my left eye for a quick thermal scan.

Does anybody know if the FLIR PS24 will light up alligator bodies since they are cold bloooded?

The IR illuminator certainly lights up their eyes bright red but we are going to get a Thermal unit for hunting hogs in our alligator infested swamps and was wondering if anyone has scoped out a gator with a thermal yet. Don't want to send the dogs in and would rather use thermal....

Gators,Swamps,Night Time ??? I'm out sticking with coyotes and pigs on dry ground myself

I saw a snake last fall with my PS32 laying on a dirt road he was warmer than the road so showed up. That said if a gator was laying in the water with only his eyes poping up it would be a hard to see critter. On the bank I bet you could see some temp difference which the thermal would see.

Thanks, we were out this past weekend with our LED flashlights and the gators eyes shone bright red without any problems.

A couple of baby gators were next to one of the 5 hogs we shot and when we went in to retrieve the hog the baby gators started squeaking and immediately the 10 foot momma gator came churning across the pond right at us.

I had the LED on her and we got the **** out of there fast. I had to hook the hog up via rope to the rear of the ATV and tow him down the road a 1/4 mile or so before we felt safe....

Tip. Try tilting the front of the ps32 when you are having lots of red showing up. It will decrease it sometimes. Don't look through it with your shooting eye too long...it will be difficult to see through your scope when it comes time to shoot.

I tried the rhino pvs14 mount and a commercial head mount it barely worked with the commercial mount the issue is the ps32 is to long to fit right feels like its pushing your eye out at the max distance setting on the rhino. One issue which I didn't really think about before I tried the flir head mounted with the commercial mask mount was the fov is so small it just sucks no way near as nice as the bigger fov you get from the pvs14 mono. Even if the mount would have worked better the small fov kills the idea of head mounted a thermal for me unless the can make a 40 degree or better fov system in the future.

Thanks for all the great first hand experience with the thermal, the slow refresh rate of 9hz is also of some concern too.

I just got the PS24 and have had it out twice. It works great to locate any animals and then take them out with NV. I got two hogs and two coyotes that I wouldn't have gotten without thermal, as they were just inside the brush along the edge of the woods and I couldn't see them with NV. I waited until they finally came out and took them. One coyote I waited for a good twenty minutes but never would have known he was there without the PS24.

The PS24 refresh rate would, I believe, make it difficult to navigate with it head mounted. Your vision would be somewhat jerking around unless you hardly move your head. It works very well for what it was intended to do, IMO.

Can this be mounted in front of a rifle scope? And be an accurate shot?

No, it would not make a good rifle scope mount addition, but it is a good deal for a hand held.

I use one of these http://www.midwayusa.com/product/579009/burris-neck-relief-binocular-strap-harness-brown

for my PS24. I got a small bolt that screws into the tripod mount hole and through the rings on the harness. (I used a little teflon tape to keep the bolt secure.)It works very well and the harness has quick disconnects on both sides but I can just grab the unit and pull it up to view without disconnecting. I would think that this would work well for guys that walk from set to set.

If I can think of another way to fasten it to the harness, I'll post it, this way was easy and probably temporary. I can't say enough about having thermal out there while you're hunting, no matter what the game is.

I am seriously considering purchasing one of these units and I need to decide if the PS32 is worth the difference over the PS24.

Has anyone here been able to do a side by side comparison of these units?

Okay......edit update.

PS32 ordered and should be here Friday. Guess I will see for myself.
