Flocked crow decoy thoughts......

With deer season winding down I have begun dreaming about crow shooting on some of the new farms I have gained access to. Typically I will carry a Buster(motion decoy) and 2 couple of Flambeau decoys. I usually run and gun using crow distress calls and 6-8 crows in a morning is a good hunt.

This year, I want to try some feeding set-ups like the guys further north do so successfully. I made the decision to increase my decoy spread and began shopping. Man oh man, those GHG flocked decoys look incredible but I can't see spending $14 a piece to shoot a crow. With a little research, I have decided to just buy a few more Flambeaus at $5 a piece and do my own flocking. Am I taking this too serious just to shoot some crows?

IMO the flambeaus do more harm than good. I have friends that tell me they work much better flocked, however.

I rarely use decoys but when I do they are GHG.

I also have 6 flocked GHG decoys that I sometimes add to my 24 Flambeaus. So far after two years of using them I can not honestly say they have increased my kill. Location is #1. Get access to a field that has 50-100 crows using it and spend the extra time to camo up real good and your success will increase.

IMO using an electronic caller with some good sounds will definitely increase your success because you can play your sounds continually unlike a mouth call where you call only when you see a crow.

Flocking is worth it,and does not take long.I only use feeding setups with approx.(21) decoys, they make a difference when your out in the fields.

How do you take something you love to serious? My wife said to me one day " you have to stop shooting crows." I looked at her puzzled and asked why and she replied "when ever I go anywhere now I feel the crows are stairing me down now." I told her just tell me where and I will look after the problem.

Flocking is good. I have a total of twelve. You are better off with a few good looking decoys than a bunch of bad looking ones. I use a Foxpro with good success. Crow season is never closed here where I live so I can hunt crows when no other seasons are open. Good luck

Thanks for the replies.

How many decoys do you typically set? It seems I typically see only 3 or 4 crows together here unless they are rallying to chase a hawk/owl. I am thinking 6-8 decoys are all need to mimic a good feeding set-up.

# of decoys:

Above I said I often use 2 dozen+ decoys.IMO the calling is more important than the number of decoys. When you hang 3-6 in trees and a few on the ground it doesn't take long to use up 1 or 2 dozen decoys. The calling brings them in and after you shoot a few you can arrange the bodies as more decoys.

Hanging a few in trees is a good idea because there always seems to be a lookout or two when a flock is feeding.

i have never used more than a dozen most of the time i stick to 1 or 2 thats it . especially while running and gunning my favorite way of hunting .

I got 2 flocked from GM and they are bigger than the Flambeaus. That fact wont hurt anythig will it? Oh they also move in the wind from a single rod.

That won't matter. Some live crows are bigger than others. Decoy movement is good. Those GHG decoys will move only slightly in a stiff breeze.
