Foggy Thanksgiving coyotes

Duhhh

Went out on a new property last night. It was looking like pristine killing weather until I hit a wall of fog on my drive out. The fog got progressively worse through the night and made it impossible to see over 200 yards.

First stand, I got one riled up and he came in to fight me. Ended up threading a bullet by a tree and killing him with a neck shot.

Second stand, I couldn’t see my call, which was only 80 yards away. Stayed a while in hopes I could coax one in close. That plan failed. Heard coyotes a ways out to my north so I made a move on them.

The third stand, I went up the field about 3/4 of a mile. Set up right outside of a tree row and still couldn’t see very far. Nothing wanted to respond to distress so I went into some vocals and fights. Before I knew it, there was a coyote 15 yards from the call. Folded him up and heard a challenge howl a few minutes later.

I challenged them back and played some fights for a long time before they went silent. I sat in the silence for about 10 minutes before I started to move around to pack up. Almost immediately, I heard a loud challenge behind the tree row. It took a long time but I finally found the coyote through the fog and shot him at 211yards, confirmed by OnX because my rangefinder couldn’t read past 40 yards. There was another coyote challenging for the next 20 minutes but I couldn’t see him. I ended up walking towards that second killed coyote and pulling my called into the field. The snow was loud as hell so I played the called in one hand whole holding the gun and tripod in the other hand. I moved up about 150 yards closer and continued to call but the coyote went silent. Ended up sitting in the silence for about 10 minutes and tried to get some cool pictures in the fog with my phone. Looked up and saw the other coyote standing by his dead buddy. Killed him right away to seal the triple. Only took a hour and three minutes.

I called it after that because of the fog. I really hate to know how many more I called in and couldn’t see through that stuff.

This was the first time using the Nocpix h50r and rix ST6 in really cold weather and fog. It was 8 degrees at one point. I’m actually impressed with both thermals battery consumption. I ran three long stands (over two hours) with a single 18650 battery.

IR is interesting, that cold fog/drizzle isn't a problem. Drive in it with headlight - can't see anything. Of course the animals are wet and cold so don't emit much heat - harder to see. H2O absorption band is in near IR (NV),

A good results hunt in bad conditions. And I hope you keep those temps "up North".;). Glad you are liking the st6
Yeah the ST6 is pretty slick. Still no regrets buying it. I did recently get access to a Nox18 to use for the season. That Nox has a wider field of view and looks pretty good. I just slapped it on my new AR for a backup but I’ll use them both through the season.

Unfortunately, the Nox looked a bit better in that fog but the RIX is $3000 less, lighter, and smaller.

Awesome hunt man! Black hot looks sick in the nocpix. I’m curious what helmet you run and what you do to keep your head warm?

Thanks. I really like black hot for shooting. White hot for scanning.

The helmet is a shellback tactical and I have a full beanie under it. It works alright but I think I’m going to switch to a OR Balaclava for a better fitment. Hopefully it doesn’t fog up my scanner

Nice! Thanks for that info.

I’m with you on scanning white hot and shooting black hot. For me the part of the reticle that matters “pops” better in black hot.
