Specifically Danville, VA. I am planning on putting in a food plot in the next couple weeks. I know I need to use some lime and I think 13-13-13 fertilizer, but I am putting the plot in an area I can't get a tiller to. I will be doing all the work with a rake and hand broadcasting. For those that have dealt with red clay, which brands of "plot in a bag" or plants do well. All the farmers in the area just plant tobacco. I was thinking a good mix of clover, rape, turnips, radishes for the main plot. Then a few rows of corn and sunflower. Thanks for any tips guys.

Loop Wing I have been putting in plots for 20 years and have just came out with my own line of seeds. As for the fertilizer and lime you should really have a soil test done. Clover is a good pick just as long as it is the right kind meaning made for poorer soils. I also like the mix of rape, turnips, and radish. Bottom line if the soil is rock hard it is going to need to be loosened up a bit. If you have any questions get with me..
Rapes are not nearly as good in the south as they are in the north.

Thanks for ya'll help so far. I am going back to the land on Good Friday, so I guess I will do a soil test. Everything I have read including you 2 say that is the most important step. Also, thanks on the rape. I just saw that in every food plot I found. I will spend more time on radishes and turnips, etc.
