For those who use shotguns

What type of shotgun are you using? I started taking mine out with me last year and it came in handy a couple times but it really isn't suited to this type of hunting. It is a 11-87 Premiere with a 30" barrel and is a bit too long, heavy and unweildy for coyotes. I'd like to pick up something shorter, lighter and cheaper to use at close range, say anything within 40 yards or so. I was looking at the Mossberg 500 and Maverick 88 but the shorter barrels don't have choke tubes so range would be very limited. They do fit the price point I'm looking at,however.
What do you guys use,and what have you found to be the right barrel length for coyote hunting?

I love my cheap Mossberg 930 with the 24" turkey barrel and adjustable fiber optic sights for coyotes. I think 24" is the longest I would go and with the right choke and load any barrel from 18" to 24" would work just fine out to 40 yards.

I use one of your contenders, the Maverick 88. It's as plain, and cheap, as they come. It works great for my needs and isn't so nice that I have to worry about it getting torn up while laying on the ground or riding in the bed of a pickup. It has the 5 shot magazine and 28" bbl. I use the factory full choke and Rem. 3" #4Bk. With rare exceptions, when I've pointed it at coyotes, they died.
It's not ideal, but for $180, I'll drive it 'til the wheels fall off.

mine is the Remington 1187 Predator. It is short and fast. I use Dead Yote in because I bought a couple cases of it when it was on sale. $18 a box!!!!!!!

Use whatever swings and feels most natural to you. For my Benelli M1's I have 18 1/2", 24", and 26" inch barrels and prefer the 24" above all others. If I were in really tight cover I would probably use the 18 1/2" and open my choke. Otherwise if forced to use something other than the 24" I would most likely go with the 26" barrel, it just swings so nice and isn't choppy feeling like the stubby tube. The 24" is a nice compromise for me.

Instead of a new gun just buy a replacement barrel for yours. Replacement barrels for a Remington are reasonably priced and come in just about any length and configuration you need.

Rem 870 3" magnum Express, 28" with Rem Choke which carries a Carlson Dead Coyote tube right now.
Not because I think Rem is the best or only way to go...
Because it was $160 out the door at a local pawn shop.

I'm shooting a Remington 870 Tactical with the 18.5" Remchoke barrel.
