For whom the dogs toll

Hey guys. I put several stories on here last winter about my "toller" bubba.

He'll be almost two this year and I can't wait to see how he does. Took him out with a "doubting Thomas" a couple of months ago. We had a male coyote respond to my calls. Three of us guys were sitting on an open hillside with no camo (we had been branding all day long). The coyote came to within 100 yards of us and stands there. Bubba knew a coyote was somewhere but just couldn't pinpoint him as the coyote was behind a small bush. "Thomas" wanted to shoot the coyote where it stood. I wouldn't let him as we were training my dog and him. The coyote couldn't stand Bubba jumping around and barking anymore and let go with a bark of his own. That's all it took. Bubba was off like a rocket and the coyote took off too. "Thomas" pipes up, "heck, I thought we were supposed to shoot them things"! I told him be patient Bubba gets some fun too. The dog and coyote go back and forth for awhile and when I think Bubba has had all the fun he can stand, I hit the tone on his collar to bring him back to us. The coyote follows Bubba back to within 50 yards and stands there barking. Finally, I tell "Thomas", Ok, now you can shoot. After that, he was a believer.

Thanks for that story, Mike. And nice to see you posting again. That dog sure looks familiar. I think he has a brother in a video I watched. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif By the way, that's some nice looking real estate in the background.

Hey Mike welcome back. Thank you for the story. Budda's sister just got spayed today and a micro chip.

Are you going to be around for a while now? Can wait to hear more stories from you and bubba!

It's been a busy summer but I should be around for awhile now.

Bubba is doing very well. He's filled out and will give any coyote a run for it's money. These Curs are great dogs.

I have one more piece of furniture to build then we'll have a few stories to tell. Poor old Bubba, everytime I start the pickup he jumps in the back only to be told no. I think he's going to disown me soon and take matters into his own hands! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Hello all. Weasel, here is the picture of Luna getting after a coyote a while back, she was 14 months old at the time and is now 28 months. I was just using her as a decoy dog at the time but have since began using her as a tolling dog.

Last year was her first year with a tri-tronics collar and she got used to it in a hurry. I now just use the praise tone, which to her now means 'come'. I did the training at the beginning of last year but just as I was about to get her out in the field for calling coyotes, I had some deaths in my family and pretty much my whole life was turned upside down. I did no calling the rest of the year to say the least.

Anyway, this will be my first year to use Luna as a tolling dog. I will keep you all posted on our success/failures. I hope to hear from the rest of you guys who are using dogs as well!

Aw......there she is. Sweet sweet Luna.
Sorry to hear of the deaths in your family, CatDog.
Hopefully, you and Luna will get out after 'em more this year.

I guess since Predator Masters has my money I can post that our new video using decoy dogs is out, and can be ordered at AllPredator calls or Gamecalls.net or Foxpros website. It will soon be available here also, and at numerous retailers. it is called "Going to the Dogs" and if you like to see decoy dogs work you will enjoy it!

Great! I'm glad to see more response here. The things these houndsmen are able to accomplish with their dogs amazes me. I'm hoping Rich in AZ posts some pics of his dog, Mattie. Not the traditional breed for decoying, but she is totally into bringing those coyotes back and putting them in Rich's lap. He has some fantastic pics of her in action. I hope he finds time to share some. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I just got "Going to The Dogs" with Cal Taylor and Murphey Love several weeks ago. If you like watching coyotes, and how they react to decoy dogs your going to really enjoy this video. Even if you have never been around dogs like the ones in the video(I never have)or don't ever plan on using dogs in this fashion, you should still check it out. You will come away amazed with these dogs and what their owners can do with them.

I watch all videos I buy once, some I watch twice, I've have already watched this one three times.

Thanks Larry,
And it is good country to actually get to see all that is going on. I have used my dogs in the timber some too, and all you get is to hear whats happening until they are right in you lap. That is when it gets interesting is when you are guessing who is coming from where and when! Are you in rougher brushier country?

Cal,

I have some country that is open enough to see the dogs work, but most of it is covered with brush and/or timber. I really enjoy watching the dogs and open country makes it easier to train young dogs. It seems to me that a young dog is less likely to get hurt in the open where he can see the coyotes and has room to move around.

I like the way you signal your dogs when it is time to come back. I've always used a tritonics collar, but your method is much simpler to use. I'll be training my dogs to that method soon.

Larry

Cal,
I just recieved your video the other day and thought the dog action was great. The reaction from the coyotes struck me as coyotes with pups more so than late fall coyotes.
I have 3 airedales that I use an old male that understands whats going on,a young male that is learning the ropes still but shows alot of promise and just picked up a pup female. As far as dog breed goes I don't think it matters as long as the dog your using learns the game and wants to engage coyotes. I would say that early spring you need a more aggessive dog that isn't afaid to get bit up alittle. I do use a tri-tronics collar with tone to have the dogs come back to me as well. Have a good season Brent

Whoo-hoo, that's gonna be awesome! I don't envy you the job of editing, though. I know that's gonna be a lot of work. Gee, if only you had access to a helicopter to get some of the races through cornfields and such. But if you can get some of the catches, it will be worth every minute of it. Are you taking advanced orders, lol. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
