For you eastern hunters: Do your coyotes howl during the daytime?

I don't think I have ever heard any howls during the day. I could be mistaken but I know the majority of howling I have ever heard was at night. Of course I am in the woods at night coon hunting sometimes too. On the other hand I deer and squirrel hunt too. I heard the most howls in an area that is not heavily populated but there are houses there. I hunt in one place that there are no houses for miles and haven't heard many howls there at all. Weird wacky stuff.?

Rich, the only theory that I've got about coyotes, is that THEY are the only ones that know what they'll do. I've never been able to really figure them out either. I think that we're all in the same boat in this respect.

I have often wondered if mortality rate plays a big role in daylight howling.Or possibly even population densities.I know that if I take out one of a mated pair I will hear the living mate howling in the area by early afternoon's within a few days.Jimmie

I live about a mile out of a small town and if I hear the fire siren go off I usually head to the door and stick my head out and normally hear coyotes sounding off after dark but have never heard them in the daytime.

It seems like in my part of the country, coyote howling is most noted in early morning prior to sunrise and late afternoon about 1 hour before dark. There are times I have heard them during mid-day but it is not the norn. Also, I have notice that they are more active during cloudy days, not overcast, just big puffy clouds. Most game and fish seem to be more active during frontal weather patterns.

The coyotes I generally hear howling are on mountain top ridges, isolated areas, where they have plenty of room to roam. These calls must be pack gathering calls, packs have been seen as large as 12, but I only have seen no more than 3 in a small pack.

Hey Coyotehunter 1,
I took my boy with me last night to do some howling. We made 5 stops and I only found one lone coyote howling back. Weird sounding howl too. I kept answering, had all kinds of dogs barking from houses 1/2 mile or so away, but this one weird howl kept returning. Finally my son says, "thats a sirene on the other side of town dad"!!!

I know I can still hear better than that.
P.S. Still waiting on that new cover scent you have, you know the, "Oh my God" stuff ?

P.s.s. Hope your dad is doing better,
Jim

Hey Doc,
LOL... on the siren!! Thanks for asking about my dad. I took him home Friday around noon. After two weeks in the hospital (one week in ICU) he was ready to come home. The old guy is tough as a pine knot. On the way home he showed me where he had been seeing coyotes crossing the highway and talked about us getting into them as soon as he gets his strength back up.

This past weekend we called a farm and killed a coyote on our first setup and blanked on our second. On the way out the landowner stopped us to see how we did and while we were talking (8:30 am) we heard a group howling across the road. They were not within hearing of any of our morning setups. The only other times I hear a coyote howl during the middle of the day is when they bust our setup or maybe hear a siren or train.

I personnaly use the howl as sort of a last ditch effort on our setups. I believe if you start out with a howl you might be hurting yourself with subordinate animals. If I howl it will usually be after my other calls. This means longer setups to allow the dog to come from a distance.

My cousin and I went out two days ago, started tand with a couple howls, then jack rabbit distress. After 15 minutes, my cousin turned off the tape, only to hear a major group howl goin' on. This was about 1 hour befor sunset. It was the first time we heard them during daylight. Never did see them though. I hope for better luck next time..
