while at gander mountain I found a Remington 770 243 for $180 but the muzzle is all beat up like they dropped it on something hard. 2nd gun is a NEF 223 with a nice laminate stock and heavy barrel. $220. anyone have experience with these two guns?

I dont know if it would do either of those well either. Maybe you can use it to practice your camo paint jobs on.

My wife's 770 is in 243. It is the youth model. Shoots great. I adjusted the trigger and that factory trigger Is great now. Can't help you on the barrel issue though. I believe the 770 barrel is pressed on and maybe pinned. It is not threaded. Mag feeds fine as well. Oh yeah stock is crappy but serviceable. I also found front action screw was too long or I tightened it too much and was binding bolt. Cut a few threads off and bolt smoothed up quite a bit. If you're in the market for a cheap 243 and can deal with the muzzle problem cheap enough go for it.

I had a NEF .223 that shot great. Friend's son "borrowed" it from me 19 years ago. No experience with the new ones. And yes they do make good truck guns, easy to get out the window because of their length.

You do need to be be careful that no one spots you doing that though. If a cop sees you tossing one out the window you could get a ticket for littering.

Better to just did a hole and bury it. And do it quick before one of your shooting buddies sees you. Being caught with a NEF would be quite humiliating after all.

not sure what the law is by you but a lot of states its illegal to discharge a firearm from a vehicle. it is on ohio, its called poaching!

whats so wrong with NEF? I wont buy 800-900 rifles. theres no point in it when I can get something that shoots good and looks good for cheaper.

While I will admit that on occasion one can stumble on an NEF (or H&R) Handi Rifle that will shoot halfway decent but if you will excuse the pun, it is pretty hit and miss. I have a friend that has a NEF .204 that will shoot pretty well. Most times well under an inch at 100 yards. But his identical rifle in .223 would never get under an 1.5" no matter what. He gave that one away. Both had horrible triggers too.

As far as looks, well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose. While I do not deem them to be ugly rifles they do look better the further away you are from them.

And I wont buy no high dollar guns either. But a decent barrel on a cheap Savage or Stevens action will shoot better than any NEF ever did and not for a lot more money either.

Even on private land? We shoot quite a few critters out the window of the truck. Local game wardens due tend to get upset if you do it from a public road. We try not to make a habit of making the game warden upset.....

yep, our dnr gives us a basic book but there's a lot of other laws they don't post in the book. I think our law on firing from a vehicle is not a dnr law but a state law. I remember years ago my uncle got sick and I said ride the atv around and he said its illegal he looked into it. shooting from a vehicle=atv was only for disabled persons, such as those that cant walk long ranges.

I would pass on both of them. If you could find an savage on the cheap then even if the barrel is bad you can find a new one on the cheap and you will have a much better gun in the long run. The 770 is not worth $100 and the NEF isn't much more.

It's perfectly legal to shoot a coyote out the window in South Dakota, even from a roadway. The vehicle has to be stopped and you have to have permission to hunt the land where the coyote is standing.

I have had two 770's one in -06 and the other in 270. Both were a huge POS with the 270 being the worst. If you need something that'll make a spare jack handle then that about all its good for. I also had an H&R 243 and I'd rate it above the 770. With enough tinkering it'd shoot around an inch. I saw a youth model 700 adl at Wal-Mart yesterday for 247. My point is for a few more dollars you can find more options, something of better quality and have more aftermarket parts if you wanted to upgrade stocks triggers etc later on.
