FOX News Poll: McCain Closing Fast
Thursday, October 30, 2008 1:38 PM

By: Rick Pedraza

A FOX News poll released Thursday shows the race between presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama has tightened considerably, with Obama now leading McCain by just three points among likely voters, 47 percent to 44 percent.

Just last week, Obama held a 49 percent to 40 percent lead over his Republican rival, but changes in several swing states has narrowed the margin the Democratic junior senator from Illinois has over McCain.

Among likely voters who say they are independent, Obama has gone from a 9 point lead over McCain last week to just 5 percentage points.

"Independent voters have long been regarded as one of the keys to this race and these results may foreshadow a tightening in the battleground states where independents carry disproportionate weight," says Ernie Paicopolos, a principal of Opinion Dynamics Corporation.

In addition, among white Catholics, Obama has completely lost the 11-point edge he held over McCain last week to a split this week of 46 percent to 46 percent.

McCain also has considerably increased the support he receives from his own party over Obama. Fully 88 percent of Republicans now back McCain, up from 83 percent last week, while Obama’s 89 percent of support among Democrats is only slightly up from the 88 percent he was receiving last week.

Among his backers, 88 percent say they support Obama "strongly" and 12 percent "only somewhat." For McCain, 78 percent of his voters support him "strongly" and 22 percent "only somewhat."

Among those who have voted early, Obama leads 52 percent to 43 percent over McCain, and newly registered voters say they will come out for Obama by 54 percent to 38 percent.

Opinion Dynamics Corp. conducted the national poll from October 28 to October 29. The poll has a 3-point error margin. "

Seems to me that Kerry was up 5 or 6 points going into election day, and Bush kicked his Herman Munster lookin butt!

Just a thought, and I don't know whether there is any difference or not, but do Republicans generally have a higher percentage turn out at the booth than democraps? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

If so, the race that really matters (i.e. what people do at the election booth) could actually be closer than the polls suggest! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm sick of these leftards playing with the pools. It turns out that osama barely scratched a few percentage point lead in California-the liberal paradise, where he should have started the show with a landslide. So far in early voting, that has not materialized. Now he's losing ground in Pa, and that spells trouble.

Actually, going by registration rolls, Democrats generally have higher numbers, however, I don't believe those numbers take into account states like mine, where party registration is not required.
Even though the poll results are often reported in the news media as XX% of Americans say "this" or "that", the fact is, they only poll a tiny percntage of the elecorate - generally 800 to 1200 people. Going by voter registration, the polls are usually weighted something along the lines of 38% Democrat, 33% percent Republican and the rest Indenpendent, in an effort to correctly sample the electorate. The difference this year is that some of the polls have been far over-sampling Democrats, some as high as 48 percent, while also over-sampling young people who support Obama. A lot of the polls are also asking registered voters - all of whom do not vote - as opposewd to likely voters, who have a history of voting and intend to vote this time.
Polls are not the end all and be all of elections, despite what some people supporting the apparent leader would like us to think. As recently as the Democrat primaries, Hillary Clinton blew away Obama in a state where the polls showed him with a substantial lead the previous day.

Dick Morris was on Sean Hannity yesterday. He said to watch the polls Monday and early Tuesday.

He indicated that if Obasm's poll numbers were around 48% Monday and early Tuesday, McCain would win. He indicated crazy Nader will pull 1 to 1.5% of the vote, and indicated the undecideds are on the McCain bandwagon and will swing the election to his favor.

We will see how that plays out.

The only poll that actually means anything is the one on Nov 4th. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

When I saw the source of your links your credibility fell to zero.

When I saw the source of your links your credibility fell to zero.

Would give credibility to polls from CNN,MSN, NY Times, etc. Who's polls are credible?

If I were to chose which fan to lose... it'd be you...
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, though: for the purpose of this reply, I will consider you have been lied to, and somehow led to believe the obamamessiah is the saviour mankind has been waiting for...

So, since you started by making credibility calls today let's talk about the credibility of the media. Yup, ALL of the media, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, all major stations and newspapers out there. Did it occur to you that all the big houses out there are pushing just one candidate? Did you wonder as to why this is? Did you even noticed it? Cared to? Does this affect the media's credibility with you???
Think about it: can all these major news-houses push just one candidate AND still call themselves 'fair and balanced journalists'?

Sooo, in this sea of leftarded media (I'm talking an overwhelming sea here) there's Rush's radio show who does buck the trend. I mean, there's not too many (any other?) shows like that out there.
As for Rush's credibility Wikipedia puts it thusly:

"As of 2006, Arbitron ratings indicated that The Rush Limbaugh Show had a minimum weekly audience of 13.5 million listeners, making it the largest radio talk show audience in the United States. In 2007, Talkers magazine again named him #1 in its "Heavy Hundred" most important talk show hosts. Limbaugh frequently mentions the EIB (Excellence In Broadcasting) network, but this is a mythic construction, as he told the New York Times in 1990".

So, rabbit, if i were to stack my credibility on something, anything oout there, I could do a lot worst than Rush's statements. In fact I'm not sure I could do any better.

But nevermind, rabbit, I agree with you that credibility is pretty essential. So, to continue in the same vein, let's talk about osama's credibility, shall we? After all he's the Messiah, the saviour so to speak. Let's talk resume here. Maybe accomplishments, right? Aside from community organizing and protesting. That wouldn't get you a job at a fast-food joint, UNLESS you're vaulted in public consciousness by Oprah's millions. But that's another topic in itself.

So, have at it. Convince me, convince us... Show me something substantial that he did, something he accomplilshed. Show me anything he did, that would merit anyone's vote next Tuesday? Note that I did not ask about what he SAID he will do. Words are just that: empty words. So let's judge your messiah by his track record. Just like we're all evaluated when we apply for a job, credit card, car loan, mortgage... are you getting the idea?

I'm all ears, rabbit...

FRIDAY Tally Of Newspaper Endorsements -- Obama In Landslide, at 240-114

By Greg Mitchell and Dexter Hill

Published: October 31, 2008 12:25 PM ET Thursday

NEW YORK (Updated Friday) We're in the homestretch! And the Obama-Biden ticket maintains its strong lead in the race for daily newspaper endorsements. The Democratic team now leads by 240 to 114, a better than 2-1 margin and an even wider spread in the circulation of those papers -- see full tally below as of today. The circulation of the Obama-backing papers stands at over 21 million, compared with McCain's 7 million.

Obama's lopsided margin, including most of the major papers that have decided so far, is in stark contrast to John Kerry barely edging George W. Bush in endorsements in 2004 by 213 to 205. Obama, with 231, has already easily topped Kerry's number with many more yet to be tallied.

We've greatly added to the separate lopsided lists of weekly and college papers below. They are not counted in the 240-114 tally of dailies.

At least 50 papers have now switched to Obama from Bush in 2004, with just four flipping to McCain. In addition, several top papers that went for Bush in 2004 have now chosen not to endorse this year, the latest being the Indianapolis Star in key swing state Indiana.

The Chicago Tribune endorsed Obama--the first Democrat that it has backed in its long history. Three of the top five dailies in deep red state Texas switched from Bush to Obama this time.

Please send any endorsements you see or make (that are not listed below) to: gmitchell@editorandpublisher.com.

For more coverage on the media and the campaign, go to our new blog: The E&P Pub

As always, we include in brackets below who the paper went with in 2004 with B=Bush and K=Kerry. The >>> signals the latest additions.

(B) = Bush; (K) = Kerry; (N) = No Endorsement in 2004
