Fox urine scent

The other day when I was in the store I got started talking with one of the guys that worked there and we were talking about coyote hunting. Well an older guy says he hunts them alot and one thing that really works well is if you use fox urine. He said that the coyotes don't like foxes in their territory and come when they smell it. Is this true? Has anyone else heard of this or even use this?

Darrel Holland (gunsmith/professional hunter) preached about the use of fox urine in his 2-disc coyote hunting DVD, but I truthfully don't know of anyone who has personally used it. I would be willing to try it as a cover scent, it's just not available near me.

Look up “cover scent” topics here to see what most experienced hunters think about them. Most recognize that a coyote will smell you right through any cover scent and so a cover scent is basically useless. Use it if it gives you confidence, but that is probably the only thing it is going to actually do for you.

Oh I wouldn't spray it on me or use it as a cover scent. The guy that said it meant it was kind of like an attractant cause coyotes don't like foxes around and will run them off if they smell them

I see, that may be very true, but how are you supposed to apply it or spray it? Wherever you go or have been, your scent will also carry even well after you leave. So for instance, lets say you are sitting on a hill overlooking a little valley. Your wind is very lightly blowing from left to right. Where do you propose putting the scent? Anything coming from out in the valley from your left will not smell you, but it wont smell your "attractant" either. Anything coming in from your right will smell your attractant, but will also smell you. *Most coyotes are gonna try and get downwind someway somehow. Some just make mistakes and choose to do it alot closer to the call. It's up to you to do your best to position yourself where they are forced to come in where you want them to. Last weekend, my wind changed and we watched a coyote come toward the call and wind us at no less than 500 yards, it happens. To a coyotes nose, winding someone is the same as when a human sees somebody waving their arms at you trying to get your attention. I mean thats just to try and put it into perspective. But like the guys said, if it gives you confidence, then go on and do it theres no harm in that. Even with all that said, coyotes will definitely do some really atypical stuff including choosing to ignore their sense of smell. I have had them come in on the same path we walked in on and suprise me from behind more times than my heart likes to admit. I hate that because it scares the crap outta me when I am concentrating on the things out ahead of me where they're "supposed" to come in from and the little boogers come in from behind and try to sit in your lap. It's still fun though

I say use the stuff, go for a max sensory over load on the dogs. The old time skunk juice was the best, man, that stuff was rank to the bone. I even spray a little fox wizz on my bush rag garnishment.

It is not so much smelling you as it is the dogs seeing you. I once had a dog follow my back trail for a couple miles through the forest, giving off danger howls, it was pretty funny. A man has to pay close attention to the wind and hunt into it.

On my bottle of fox urine it says, "Danger, do not spray this product on yourself or you maybe attacked." Maybe I should read the directions first.

I have seen where we have set up stands and got back to the truck only to see coyote tracks right over our own tracks, They walked right past the truck and followed on up to our stand. I have also shot a coyote not 100 yards from a critter getter trap. sometimes they will scent you and run, other times their curiosity or whatever gets the best of them.

I do believe that a cover scent still won't mask the your own scent and they will come in or not regardless of any scent you might use.

I am one of the crazy fools who sprays it on. I cover my boots with it a few times a day when hunting. Sometimes just for a Friday night on the town too. Just kiddin'. Really, I just spray a little on the bottoms and tops of my boots. Does it fool a coyotes nose, no. Does it give me an extra second to get a shot off at a curious coyote, possibly. Does it make me more confident, yes. The spraying of the urine is a psycological thing with me and if I don't use it and don't call anything in it is because I didn't use it. I have lucky draws too though so I'm just kinda supersticious I guess.

I have used the fox urine by putting a cotton ball in a skoal can. I put the can near the call which is placed out in front of my stand. I have had a coyote stand out in front of me looking confused, it made for an easy shot. spike

I was putting a bloody venison steak on the backyard grill once and a coyote came up within fifty feet and stood there
with me moving, making racket, obviuosly being a human. It was dusk and I thought it was a neighbor's sheppard so I yelled 'git' and it finally loped away further but stopped broadside at fifty yards. It was drawn to that deer blood. I may thaw out a deer meat steak and put it in a Tupperware with the lid off and set it by my Mojo. Gamey, bloody deer meat is like crack to a coyote and strong enough if it doesn't cover human scent it may at least override a coyote's common sense.

I would haeve to agree with azrednekrabbitt, i use it as well althought i just sray it on the bottom of my boots to and from every stand. I don't really know that it helps but i know it can't hurt plus it just adds more fun to your hunt.
