Fox vs. Coyote?

Excellent job there Jeff C. What's that green stuff amongst those fallen leaves in the foreground of the photo? Is that what they call green grass??? Haven't seen that up here in North Dakota since the third week in October. Brrrr, sure is cold and white up here.

Yep sure is grass. It just has started getting cold here. It was about 38 or 40 degrees last night when i took those pictures. that is way too cold for me!

Sheesh, I was beginning to think that I was the only one that thought COYOTES suck!

I was raised as a spot and stalk type hunter, shooting my first Red at 12 yrs of age, with a 22 LR. Got a 6mm for Christmas for my 13th birthday, and changed to a 22-250 after graduation, changing to a.17 for the last ten years or so. Its too bad for the new, and young hunters that will not be able to experience the days of spotting 10-15 fox per day, or even in the good days, 50-70 fox per day, picking and choosing which ones to go after. I always have felt that my worst times in fox hunting were the high price days of the early eighties, for some reason, I hated that time. Probably because I was jealous of the added pressure put on the fox population by newbies that were only in it for the money. I now feel like this current time frame has hit the low spot for me, as I have been tiring rapidly of putting on 100-150 miles and not seeing squat. Havent shot a fox in 3 years,, not because I couldn't, but because I chose not to.

I have tried adapting to the coyotes, and am having fair success using my old techniques, but it is tedious, and time consuming, and I am always resorting back to my old spotting days, and this gets me into trouble by taking me one ridge farther in the country while trying to call.

I long for the days of seeing "ol red" lounging on a snowbank, soaking up the rays. Trying to figure out a way to get to him, without disturbing him was always one of the most discussed things ever talked about in the company of friends, any other times, were spent with your eyes peeled to the horizon, just hoping to be the next one to say, "There's one!" Hmmm, Now how do we get there?

I'm not ready to give up, but am really worried that we have seen the good times, and may never see them again.

Hope you dont mind my wanderings. It seems like there are a few ppl here that may feel the same way. If so, Im in good company.

Randy, Coming from you, I take that as a extreme compliment. Im sure we have alot in common. I read your page front to back shortly after you put it on the internet and was really impressed with your knowledge and ability to put into words alot of my experiences. Thank you for the compliment.

I have taken up shooting fox with the camera lately, trying to recapture days past. My technique is extremely crude, but it does get the picture of what Im seeing across. Im shooting thru my spotting scope with a digital camera pushed up against, lens to lens. Actually, it works pretty good most times.

Hers a pic of my 9 yr old daughters first red fox. .17 Rem. 90 yds. 1997. The beginning of the end. Not a good pic, but under the circumstances I think you get the drift. These are scans, so they arent so good.
