FoxPro battery life?

I purchased a new XR6 yesterday and tried it out today for the first time. I put brand new duracell batteris in it and used it at full volume. I would turn the call on for 3-5 minutes and then turn it off for about 3-5 minutes and repeat. I did this for about 2.5 hours today and the batterys are dead now, call died on me right at prime time for coyote hunting!!!

Is this normal? Return it? Anything to do to make it last longer?

Not sure about the XR6, but I use energizer rechargables in my fx3 and it can go all day at full volume, and on some stands use my sp-55. Not sure if the rechargeables last longer than the regular alkaline batteries or not.

If you use alkaline batteries, they discharge differently than rechargeables. Alkaline loose voltage IE: start out at 1.6 volts each and when being used drop in voltage. Once they get to about .8 volts they become pretty much useless.

Where the NiMh fully fresh charged are at about 1.3 volts and as they are used they loose amp hours. But when they are just about used up they are still putting out 1.2 volts.

So eight alkaline start out at about 12.8 volts and when half used up are putting out 6.4 volts.

Eight NiMh start out at about 9.6 volts but when used up are still putting out 9.6 volts. The electronics in the call require X number of volts to work well or work at all. So using the rechargables is the way to go.

There are some new battery types out which seem to have the best of both. They are called Hybrid rechargables. Sanyo Enloop is one, my favourite so far is a brand called Hybrio.

I dont know where your calling fields,or woods but I dont see any reason in tn. or ky to be using it at full volume. I have a xr -6 also and have killed them in ky in fields and very thick woods with lots of ridges at half volume! I could see if you were on open plains out west but not around here. I would try some energizer re-chargeables, thats what I use and have very goodluck with them! Good luckon the yotes!

I use the 2500mha Energizer Rechargable and have had Great luck.. I keep a spare battery pack charged, but have yet to need it even after hunting All Day with Long Stands... This is with a Scorpion, but the same holds true. Don't expect much from alkaline batts. ~Ace~

Regency,

This does not sound like normal battery life for the XR6. The battery life on the XR6 is much better than that of the FX series and Scorpion. If I were a betting man, I would say that one of the batteries was either in backwards, or was not a full battery to begin with (remember that a good percentage of alkalines off of the shelf are not full). If it continues to be a problem, let me know.

JMHO-- I believe todays e-callers should be run on rechargeables only. That way we know what we have before leaving the house. Is there really a way to know by the packaging how long a battery has been in it?? Just a few random thoughts.

regency,
Mike said it about right "maybe one battery was not a full charge".

A good battery checker will last for many years and become a valuable tool for watching how your battery's are holding up.

I order this Battery tester. a couple months ago. It works for rechargeable & alkaline. Might give it some thought, it only takes just one weak battery to drain the other's down quickly....
