Franchi Affinity compact 20ga

These seem to be sweet little youth shot guns. I'm thinking about getting one for my son for Christmas. Just seeing if any you guys already have one and if so what are the goods and bads if any? Thanks in advance.

Yep, I have one. Main problem is the recoil pad is no pad at all. Thing is hard as a brick. No pads will have holes that line up. To get a new pad installed will be a major pain that will require epoxy and a block of wood to screw into or similar. All this is going to add about 100 bucks to have done. Even with a kickeeze on it the gun kicks very hard because its so light. You can't add too much weight to inertia guns without it jamming. In hindsight it was a terrible choice.

A better choice if you have the money would be a winchester sx3 compact. Gas operated, little heavier, decent recoil pad. Can add as much weight as desired without it jamming.

If a tighter budget maybe the weatherby sa-o8.

If you can find one used, beretta 3901RL.

Consider buying any adult gun and just having it cut down. When they are older get a fullsize stock. It would give you many more choices.

I have the Franchi Affinity 12 gauge that is my GO-TO gun for all predator, waterfowl and clays. I have thousands of rounds without one issue. I will admit, the recoil is more noticeable than a gas operated gun when shooting clays. Never notice it in the field. Everyone has different expectations of their guns. Would it be possible to take your son and let him pick one out? My first gun was a Mossburg 20 gauge pump and is one of my most cherished guns...Just because I went with Dad to pick it out and he bought it for me.

Recoil sensitvity is totally dependent on the shooter. I never notice recoil until a few 3 1/2 turkey loads or a box of 3" goose loads out of a 12 ga.

I don't have a Franchi but they are supposed to be solid guns. If I'm remembering correctly there may be a sharp edge on the 20ga where you load shells. I can't remember if it was on the Franchi or the Beretta I looked at. It was a common complaint and it was only on the 20, not the 12.

These would be good points if any of them were true. I switched to a Franchi 20ga after my second shoulder surgery a few years ago and just can't seem to go back to a 12ga for shooting dove. A new pad can be ground to fit by using the original recoil pad base and mounting to it. Setting up the stock to fit the shooter will help with accuracy and recoil.

Do you own the compact or the full size? I assure you all of these things are true. You could screw to one of the LOP spacers, depending on the LOP you desire and thickness of the pad. You will then only have 1/4" of plastic gripping the screw unless you epoxy threaded steal inserts. My franchi 48 weighs less and has far less recoil.

just looked at this shot gun for the first time. i dont know much about franchii...it really resembles a Benelli to me. is benelli making them for franchii

I have the standard 20 gauge and it's hands down beats any of the Remingtons just in weight let alone performance and comes with shims to fit the stock to your face. If a shotgun doesn't fit to your cheek you won't have a correct sight picture and will never shoot consistently. What are the odds of buying a suit off the rack and having it fit ? Why do it with a shotgun then ? Rems don't come with shims. Light weight is a big consideration for a kids gun and the Affinity is ~2 lbs less than an 1100 or 11-87. Could you get one of the slip over type recoil pads ?
Didn't Berretta buy Franchi & Benelli ?

Comparing to a Remington is not setting the bar very high...

Yes, it's made by Benelli. It's dang near identical to the M2 compact minus the comfort tech stock. It even has Benelli stamped in the receiver. I went ahead a rolled the dice and bought it. It has great reviews everywhere.

I have Affinitys in 12 and 20 gauge. I'm also very recoil sensitive having had three shoulder surgeries. All I've ever shot through them are light loads but the recoil didn't seem harsh at all. For some reason(fit) I am more accurate with my Affinitys than with my four SX3s but for duck I shoot my Winchesters because I know the Franchi would beat me up with 3" shells.
