freeze brand experience at the vet tody (update)

Took my pup in to get a freeze brand today , had spoken to one vet at the office, a great guy who I have dealt with often for and horse and cattle, on her last round of shots and chip implant, he said not a problem they do cattle and horses all the time and he had done several dogs in the past.

Made the appointment for today and when I show up the new vet (fill in) is working and he questions me on why I want to freeze brand my dog as they prefer chips? I said she has a chip and that’s great if someone finds the dog and brings it in to be scanned, but if they steal the dog and bring it in are you going to scan it to verify ownership? Then I add But if the dog is freeze branded and I have given you a poster that I have posted all over of a stolen dog and you see the dog with the same freeze brand you will know (Hey this is not the owner and this dog is stolen)

he says ok I understand but I have never heard of it, I said well do a search on the internet and you will see its common practice, he says I don’t’ use the internet and if I do I only go to vet forums, otherwise the info in not reliable . I said well if you did you will see it is a common practice, he says I’ll do it only if its humane? I asked him, So you do horse and cattle right? What’s the difference? He says well they have thicker skin! So I say “so on a dogs ear you don’t hold it on as long? right ? so it shouldn’t be any less humane”

I’m now wondering if I want this guy to touch my dog, I google on my phone freeze branding on dogs to get the correct time for an ear brand as I know now this guy has no idea, and tell him no more than 12- 15 seconds on an ear with liquid nitrogen. They Give her the dope and knock her out and shave the ear and prep the site with alcohol, lucky I had made sure the brand would fit before he did it (he never asked or looked before applying the brand)

All went well and it looked good as per one of the vet Tec’s who had done dogs before but what an idiotic vet, I think he just didn’t’ like people that hunt or use a dog for hunting anything other than retrieving birds! From now on I will ask which vet will see my dog for any emergency

58 days later, I think the brand was held on a little long for liquid nitrogen 15 seconds, maybe 10 seconds would have done it with LN 15 for dry ice? the hair did not grow back in the center and white on the edges, which looks kind of cool just the same with the blk/wht 6

that was a solid brass brand my friend has for his mini long horns he has a set of numbers and his brand that I liked but a little large for the dog,

will post the end results from what I understand it will be 30 days, and the hair will grow back white. the reason I did it on her ears as she is light in color on the body and dark on the ears.

note: that vet was concerned but was still more than willing to take my $150 for branding and parvo booster.

Sounds like a tool!

Ive got a brand ordered. Going to go with shoulder cause my dogs dont have much ear. How old should a dog be before you brand it?

I waited till her ear was big enough @ 8 months other than that I don't think age matters much? maybe some of the others with more experience can give some thoughts

I was just curious since Im going on shoulder if the skin would stretch as they grew and mess the brand up. I dont have a clue what Im talking about is why I asked. I have a couple 8 month olds Im fixing to start hunting soon and dont want to lose em.

I had a birdog once that had a tattoo from the previous owner. Was a good dog till it got hit by a car never was able to hunt very well after that.

i freeze brand all of my horses. havent done my dog yet, but the guy i use charges $30. he has been freeze branding for 30+ years.

Jeff, we always did ours as pups, you dont need to dope 'em that way, plus as they grow the brand will distort some making it alot harder for a guy to re-brand if the dog is ever stolen. May be cookey nonsense but thats what we did.

shoot, a buddy got a new pup a while back and I told him I'd help him give the shots. When he went to get the rabies vaccine and said it already had its boosters you would have thought he was some sort of pariah the way the vet, wait scratch that, the idiot working the counter/phones acted.

If you tried to walk in and get a freeze brand they'd probably call animal control.

Jglynn - Do you sedate the horses, or just put them into a squeeze chute? We are getting ready to do our dogs and horses, and would like to get them all done in a weekend if we can!

Don't have any experience freeze branding dogs but we just twitch there noses and they stand still and we put it on there hips for a certain amount of time, varies on thickness of the skin on the horse for the amount of time the iron is held on them. We usually hold are branding iron on for 13 seconds. We first though shave the spot of where the brand is going and then we drench it in rubbing alchol so you get a good burn.
