Friday Jack Rabbit Hunt

Went out friday for Jack Rabbits. it rained for a few hours so it was pretty decsent, rabbits were running everywhere. Most were shot with 22 mag and 17 HMR a few w/ 22-250 and 223 WSSM.

Shin them rabbits and soak'm in heavy salted water overnight and then boil'm good. It's worth the effort.

i was not familiar with jackrabbits 'till i was temporarily based here in fort hood, tx. those jack rabbits are huge targets. the ranchers want them all shot.

they explode, and turn into red mist with a .223 round. i need to bring out the .17 hmr one of these times, and make a meal out of it. are they good eating? i do not want to waste more if they are tasty.

what a huge, stupid target they make. why they consistently come out at night, when doing a distressed jackrabbit call - for coyotes - i will never know.
 
i dont know if they are good eating or not. are they the same as hares??? because in our ranch we kill a lot of hares, but we dont eat them. we give them to the dogs. i have heard that they are dirty and the meat is hard. i have also heard of people eating them, so you might try them and tell us what you think. i will continue giving them to the dogs. however, if i get a cottontail, thats another story =)
 
Nice shooting guys. Wich was more fun, shooting the jacks or shooting down hardrock when he tried to poach your thread? aee....they "are" edible, (I guess a shoe is technically edible too), but not many would deem them as "good eating". Oh yeow, A jack is a Hare.
 
HardRock was out there with us but the recognition we would have gave him is the kind no one would want!! I dont think i would eat a jackrabbit, we hunt snowshoes in washington where im from and we dont eat them tell the first frost, im not sure if the weather in tucson is cold enough to get rid of the worms and disease in rabbits.

i will continue to shoot jack, and eat cottontails. i do not care to try eating jack if they are stringy.

just got my blue heeler puppy,(my coyote decoy/varmint flusher & treeing killer)who will be fed all the jacks. 16 weeks old, and she's allready killed 1 1/2 domesticated cats, treed cats, and chased a coon!

MEX3D - how do you give the jacks to your dogs? whole and raw? boiled? grilled? fried? serious question. i want to know, guys.

i will miss texas jack hunting, because i leave fort hood as a civilian on nov 7th, and will have to travel from tulsa to enid to hunt them again.i love stupid targets.

Skin them, gut them, and cut their heads and feet off, then give it to the dog in an edible amount, don't worry about cutting it up, it's good for dog's teeth to chew the raw bones
 
hey aeee, i just kill them and give them to the dogs. sometimes my uncle skins them in the morning after the hunt, but i dont really know why. i have always just thrown the hares to the dogs with head and everything, guts included. this is, to the ranch's dogs, that might have ticks or something and its very difficult to keep clean. on the rare ocassion i have brought hares to the house's dog, i took off the skin to avoid ticks. if the ears are infested with ticks, i cut the head off right after the kill.

this is a pic from last saturday, we got 13 hares and 2 rabbits, but 3 of the hares had the gust hanging out from the .22 mag hit, so we left them there for the coyotes....
