Hunting buddy had the day off yesterday and wanted me to come with. My boss would only give me an early dismissal.
Buddy had some permission on some great spots early in the day when it was still racist out (white, sarcasm for those that don’t know). He set up his Foxpro and was able to call in a pair and drop them both. His Rem 700 in 22-250 found its mark.
The next stand he was able to call one within range. It was on the other side of a barb wire fence. Sitting and facing him straight on. The wire was directly center where he would place his cross hairs. Having hit barb wire before when hunting he decided a head shot was in order. As one can see in the pic he dropped that one.
He had a couple unsuccessful stands and had one he missed. Beautiful prairie scenery and wonderful weather.
Finally I got off work. He swung by to pick me up. We headed to a buudy’s place and hiked in a mile to get to a good spot. Unfortunately the yodel dawgs were hanging out with buddy’s herd and were downwind of us. As we were packing up we spotted one at 600 yards. It definitely saw us and teased us as it sauntered away.
We decided to head west into the wind. We parked the truck and headed south to make a stand. Just as we were rounding a knoll we spotted a pair at 600 yards. We slowly crouched down and set up the call behind us. Buddy was prone and I was seated in my lounger. It didn’t take long and a coyote was coming in. It popped up just 30 yards 90 degrees to where buddy was pointing. He didn’t see it. I waited, hoping the second dawg would follow. It noticed us and was leaving. I turned, barked at it and dropped it when it stopped at ~100 yards with my 243. Easy to call when they’re close and you spot them.
We did a couple more stands. The next one we were about to give up and were packing up when we heard some yips. I answered on my calls from Yotarunner. We thought we could head north to find it….it was closer than we thought it came around the hill and was close. It spotted us and took off. We couldn’t get it to stop.
Overall a great day started of white and turned to brown as it warmed up throughout the day. Had some elk sausage and a frosty beverage and relived the hunt to end the day.
