Front Sling Mount Options

I added two QD swivel mounts on my free-floated AR that allows the rifle to be carried in an upright position. This helps when walking about, looking for chucks and stuff. This also works well with a bipod mounted. I put a QD stud in the free-float tube at about the 11:00 position. (the 11:00 position as viewed when shouldering the rifle) They make machined mounting studs with a rounded nut specifically for this. I picked them up at a local show. I also used a regular wood stock mounting stud and installed it at the 11:00 position on a normal A2 AR stock. Take care to mount this below the recoil tube. I epoxied it from the inside to make sure it stays put. I don’t use the internal storage space so no problem there. This won't work if you use a collapsible or adjustable stock but I have found this to work well for me.

Gabe. Yeah, I figured you'd ask for pics. I'm new to the forum so I'll have to figure out how to do that. The flush mounts are nice, my Dad has something similar on a 788 in 222 Rem. The downside is that it limits your sling selection. I have a bunch of slings of different types and styles. By using standard QD studs, I can use any one of the numerous slings I have. This flush mounted style would require specific swivels on the sling. The QD studs I have on my rig do stick out but they are rounded and are in locations that don't cause problems. My rig started out as a standard A2 kit from Model 1 Sales many years ago. It's been modded with a one-piece free float tube and flat top upper. I'll see if I can post photos.

This shows the location of the front swivel stud on the free float tube.

This shows the rear swivel mount. It's drilled through the A2 stock below the recoil tube. It's epoxied in place and is holding up very well. I removed the AR lower sling mount and drilled out a large hole for a threaded rod connecting nut. I also located, drilled and tapped another hole in this nut for the lower recoil pad screw. Epoxied everything in place and hit the stock with truck bed liner spray paint. The small length of threaded rod has a nyloc stop nut on the bottom that threads into an extension I made from a piece of 1/2 copper pipe. When deployed I have a field expedient stable tripod shooting position on the ground or flat bench. When I'm ready to move. I unscrew the copper extension, put that into the storage space in the stock and screw the threaded rod up all the way.

I have a Yankee Hill freefloat and I just ran the sling through the handguard as a quick fix when I first installed the handguard. I have never considered any other options since it works so well.
