Frozen firing pin

Yesterday, I spotted a nice red curled up out in the field. I carefully snuck 300 yds closer, took careful aim, and click!! jacked in new shell. click! Dented primers but no boom. It was darn cold but I didn't think it should slow down the firing pin! What do you guys think? Gun is almost new Rem. model 7. Do I need to dissassemble bolt? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Yep, if you hunt in real cold you need to degrease the pin. Even if it doesn't freeze solid, grease & oil can thicken up enough to prevent ignition.

Nailbender,

Pull the bolt and spray it internally with Birchwood Casey's "Crudcutter", Hornady's "One Shot". or in a pinch, WD-40.

Any one of these should knock the pin loose and free things up pretty well without having to pull the bolt apart. Working it and dry firing it in the receiver might help loosen anything stubborn.

If it's anything solid, like a piece of dirt or debris of some sort, you might have to disassemble it, but I doubt it.

Really sucks to have it screw up on a shot at game though.
