Frustrated in Finding Night Lights for Hunting: Help!

Ah..heck...I just bought it too except for the mount. Now I'm done with lights...an optronics to mount to the rifle and this little bugger to tape to the shotgun. Total cost under $200 and I'm finished.

Now...about that headlamp :).

You guys must be all shooting far away at night /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif If I used some of those lights you guys use I guess I'd have to shoot long range too. With a red filter on a light I usually have called in greyfox,Bobcat and coons mostly under 50yrds.Some almost in my lap.Now having said that IF the light is TOO strong the red filter lens is no longer a barrier between you and the animal. To sum it up they usually blink thier eyes if its too strong. Most have called in over a thousand greys and used nothing more then a good hand held 6 volt lantern flashlight with a red filter.Shotguns work great at night as well as a good .22mag.I have tried powerful lights but in my experience the critters just don't come in closer if your using the light correctly.I also have a Burnham Brothers SL shooting lite that goes on a rifle.Good little light.I have a kitten cooner also good little light with the red lens.If they blink there eyes its too strong!!So good luck shooting far away /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif If it gets foggy, lights just don't work too good at all.Just passing on things critters have taught me in the dark.I also learned from and old timer so much about using lights that I was really taught a lot also.If your also aloud to nite hunt in your state from a vehicle or on your land the Gel Cell car batterys may cost more but worth every penny if your using a big spot to scan the surroundings with. This method may be your fellas prefered as we call it when were ready to shoot: BURN UM! Your really just blinding em for a couple secs tell you shoot.IMO I also prefer the red lens over the amber.Personal preference I recon.I think the cones in the critters eyes tolorate red better. This info is free.So if you don't like or disagree I'm still right. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

mbowerma...I like it. Have you hunted with it yet? I wonder if it would work taped to my shotgun as a kill light?

That is what I will use it for. I have not hunted with it but I have shot with it both on a Rem 1100 and an AR 223.

I practice at night using reflective tacks for POA and center of pattern shots.

The light does stand up to the 1100 with 3 inch mag shells.

As to taping it, It might work It would be up to you to test that.

mag light on double barrel. Any farmer worth his salt knows how to line up a mag light and his sights. I used a door knob to line mine up. put cardboard between the light and the barrel to align it. Awesome weapon out of a chevy pick up bed. Mind you this was never called hunting, we killed deer with a permit that ate our crops. We had a couple hundred acre of alfalfa that got hundreds of deer every night. Cows were supposed to eat it not deer! I am sure that this set up is illegal anywhere but on our private property I would not drive around with it.

bobcat...I also have a 6volt lanter style light. However, if your light is too bright all you do is put some red saran wrap over the filter and it gets less bright. But if your light is too dull nothing you can do to make it brighter I recon. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

It will burn for over an hour. Some on candle power forum show the bulb used going 115 minutes. On the batteries. But seeing it is used like a scope light and not a spotting light it will last a long time. The other thing about it is that it maintains near full bright till just before the batteries are spent.

If you are getting one you will be amazed. It is like 3 times brighter maybe more than a 4 cell mag lite and they get dimmer from the time you turn them on.

Yep...based on your recommendation I ordered what you did last night. 115 minutes is terrific. Do you think it would be a good idea to get a replacement bulb? I like that it doubles as a tactical light for my house Beretta's :).

Bought a spare bulb. You sure are a light nerd /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif. You have done your homework that is for sure. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

So how is the predator hunting up there? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

There are lots of critters in the areas I hunt. Only in the last year have my hunting partner and I got at all serious about hunting them though.
We used to call a few with hand calls and tried a few years back with a JS tape caller. We just were more interested in Deer, Turkey, Geese. We also did a bit of coon with dogs.

We have got a few fox and coon while calling but not a coyote yet. I'm sure that will happen this season. There are a lot around our areas. We did educate and see and miss a few last year. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif So now I think we are ready. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Yeah I am a flashlight nerd and a boot nerd, just ask my wife /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Well it is cheaper than being a gun nerd :).

What part of NY are you from? I have a friend in the Adirondaks who sees a lot of coyotes. I used to live near the finger lakes region.
