Hey guys, i've searched and searched but can't find any info. Has anyone tried or have any info about using a .50 cal bullet for the .500 S&W in a muzzleloader.

Thanks.

only way you could would be to cast your own with lube groves,,in which case you would have something that has been around forever,,A Buffalo bullet.

Now maybe a saboted .500 in a 54 cal muzzleloader,,that might be good.

The buffalos are inaccurate as all get out,,,other than power belts occasionally, i just run 44 mag sabots through my 50 cal.

Hope this helps........X

Forgot to add,,i would not try stuffing a .500 bullet on top of powder and expect any accuracy at all.

You would get little to no spin from the bullet.

Bacically for accuracy you gotta have something digging into the grooves, not just riding the lands.

Patch wrapped ball(my favorite)
Saboted slug.
belted slug (Power belt).................

There are a lot of guys doing it but most are using smokeless rigs and .40 .44 or .45 caliber barrels. With the smokeless powder it's got to be a very tight fit or the powder won't have enough pressure to ignite properly. The tight fit also helps with contact between bullet and rifling. With a blackpowder setup it doesn't have to be as tight, the base of the bullet expands to engage the rifling and ignition isn't such a concern. Doug's message board should provide you with lots of info.

Just to add some to the above post. The most critical thing for shooting nekkid bullets is getting the proper size to match your bore. Some guys press them through a sizing die to make them smaller, others knurl them by rolling them between two bast@rd files to make them bigger. Some size them under then knurl them back up.

There is a bullet out there called Thor its a Barnes bullet, solid copper, with a hollow base, similar to Hornady's full bore offering, but much tougher and better shooting. They are offered in different sizes and if you contact the guy he will make up a sample pack to try if you don't know your bore size. There are tons of options I'm just giving you a glimpse so you know it's not a crazy idea, quite a few guys are doing it with great results.
