fur friendly .220 Swift load?

I currently load a 55 gr Vmax in my .223 and my Swift. i would like to make one of them a more fur friendly load but dont really know where to start. Would it be more beneficial to change bullet styles, weight, or lower my velocity? I don't actually know my velocity but by the book I should be around 2800 on the ,223 and 4600 on the swift. Really just wondering which factor has the largest impact on how much an animal gets torn up. PLEASE don't tell me I need a .17 or .204

Is this a typo?

I'm guessing that he meant 3600.

3600 isn't blistering out of a swift. You get people that say they get fur damage from a .223 or even a .222 with lower velocities. I don't have all the answers, but I think the Vmax is a great bullet so I'd work on lower velocities or try a bullet like a fmj that leaves two nice small holes. I know Barnes makes a 36 gr .224 grenade. You could try something like that at moderate velocities. The swift is a great round but sometimes it's it's own worst enemy!

Yes I apologize, the 4600 fps claim was a typo on my part. I would really like to try some lighter bullets in my .223 but it being a 1:9 twist I don't know what to expect.

I would give the 60gr vmax a go. Works real well on coyotes and is constructed heavy enough that it usually doesn't make a mess at 223 velocity. That's what I run in my 223 calling rifle and I am happy with it.

I have had great luck with the Speer 52 grain HP on coyotes out of my Swift. The old style huge hollow point. It rarely exits a coyote with a good chest shot. Shots around the edges or neck shots and all bets are off. Likely to be pretty rough on a fox or small cats. I've heard the Sierra 55 grain BTSP Game King is a good bullet for all three critters leaving only small exit wounds. I haven't tried it yet but got some to work up some loads.

I shoot the Horn 55gr V-max and the Horn 53gr match HP. I also found out that the HPs are easier on fur than the v-max's are out of my swift. Shooting around that 3600 mark. I had way to many splashes with the V-max. Once in a while I will have a large (dime to quarter)exit with the HPs. Good luck!

have to agree with grayghoste78,the 53horn hp hard to beat.my swift loves them.ive coyote hunted a long time with everything.222 with 52 or 53 loaded close to max works very well.and you do not have a hole to put your fist thru.im stuck in 17,land rite now,and having a blast shooting crows with them.in my hunting tests vmax nosler or any plastic tipped bullets do sever damage, thats what they were made to do.
