G2 Contender Pistol

Im thinking about a G2 Contender pistol in a 223 or 204 14" barrel for coyote hunting just for something different.

Anybody shooting one ? I have never shot one before, or known anyone who has hunted with one of them.

any thoughts ??

Get a frame that is registered as a pistol. It can be a rifle or a pistol. But if you buy one that is registerd as a rifle, you cant use it as a pistol. Fed laws suck.

I have no experience with Contenders so the only thing i can add is a note about the twist rate. The .223 barrel is a twist of 1 in 12 so you must keep your bullets 60gr or below.

I bought one(carbine) in .223 for my youngest son a few years ago. It is handy and accurate enough for any reasonable use. He killed his first white tail with it. I'm not much of a pistolero.

I used a .223 and a .17 Remington in a 14" Contender pistol for groundhog hunting for years. I've also used a .204 but it was a rifle barrel.

You've received some good advice already, pertaining to the twist and making sure how the receiver is registered.

It's a little tough getting the velocity out of those short barrels. But IIRC I was running 55gr Nosler BT's right around 3000 using Varget in my 223.

I've had both Encores and Contenders and have gotten my best accuracy out of the Contenders.

My thoughts? I have been shooting them for years. They are a lot of fun and are often very accurate. They can be challenging to hunt with, but that is the point. I rarely have much difficulty getting them to shoot MOA. Even my 11" .44 Mag shoots 1.5" 5 shot groups at 100 yards. My 221 FB carbine is one of the most accurate guns I own and shoots better than 1/2" 5 shot groups at 100 yards. As has been mentioned, I tend to get better accuracy out of the Contenders than the Encore. I also prefer the old Contenders over the G2.

i have an encore with a 14" pistol bbl i .223
I shoot 55 grain nosler ballistic tips and nosler 60 grain partitions very accurate with it. I can hit soda cans off my knee at 125 yards pretty consistant with open sights. One thing is the short bbl these gun really bark loud. So if your thinking .223 for a lil quieter gun its not with a pistol length bbl!

I had a 7mm TCU barrel on one. Wish I still had it. It was a shooter. Easy to make the cartridges from .223, just run the ctg into the sizing die and you are done. Same with the 6mm TCU. I currently have a .22 Hornet rifle barrel on it. Also a shooter.

I have a 14" Contender in 222. Hot little coyote gun. Easy to carry and climb with. I rarely shoot over 60 yards but it's deadly at that range.

bkauz. I have used the 223 encore with a 15" barrel and a 2x pistol scope with good results. I'm looking forward to using a rifle scope in the future. the pistol scope takes some getting used to since the scope is far from your eye and has a limited field of view. the best bullet for me was the 50gr hornady soft pt. I had a tc 204 pistol barrel and the only bullet it shot well was the 32gr because of the twist. spike

I have 2 frames, and several barrels. one is the 223 14", and it shoots quite well. also have a 21" barrel for it, and that really shoots great. others are a 45/410 and a 35 herret, which also shoots good. they are fun, and the carbine is really handy for a rifle. as was mentioned, start out with a pistol to be legal. good luck if you get one.

How about an Encore for coyotes. I have a .22-250 barrel for mine, its fun to shoot. Still waiting to try it on a coyote. Lots of barrel options for the T/C's. This pic its wearing it's .30/06 barrel.

Not a G2 but an original Contender....14" 223 barrel with a 2x7 variable scope. If you're shooting in the field, get a set of shooting sticks. Original Contenders have better triggers!
