UP 223 SAVAGE

New member
what should i expect from my pup come hunting seson? she will be one year old this september. she seams to be doing ok on training her now, she somtimes points, and wows but not all the time. we will be working her outside more come spring, to cold and to much snow now for her to be out for any length of time. do you think she will be pointing birds by next fall? im not expecting her to be real good but what do you think?

Up 223 - Your dog should be pointing easily by then. You will be surprised when you start working her this spring how much she will learn and how quickly. One of my most favorite things is to see a young dog when it first clicks in their head "HEY THIS IS WHAT I WAS BORN TO DO!!". Don't play with the feather on the fishing pole trick too long. When you see that she has point in her it is time to give that up. Sometimes guys play that too long because it is fun to watch but can lead to the pup pointing at things that "might" be a feather. If you don't already know there are the three most important commands that your dog MUST learn and know them well. WHOA WHOA and WHOA. You teach your dog this and he/she will teach you the rest. You may even save it's life someday by that command.
Is this your first birddog? I like your choice in breeds if you hadn't noticed. What bloodlines do you have?
Also remember that the first season is really for the dog. You need to handle her so that she learns hunting is FUN!!! Let her chase a bird now and then.
I should be getting a pup soon if the weather warms up so she can ship. I have been waiting on her almost two years so I am getting excited.

I don't do any formal training until a pup is close to a year old. before that all I do is take them to the field and let them have fun, they will learn to hunt and stay with you just from being with you in the field. It gives them a chance to chase all the chi chi birds and butterflies they want to and get that out of thier system. When pup starts point and holding for a bit they are telling me that they need help from here. Thats when the formal training starts. If you break a pup too early, you won't have much dog when your finished.

First of all, congradulations on your Shorthair!
I know it's probably to cold up where you are right now, but get in touch with a couple of the local trainers in your area and find out when or if they will be having a "Puppy Derby" these are kind of like informal field trials for puppies! Try to attend one, they are great fun to watch! You'll be able to talk to other owners, get ideas and learn a few tricks along the way.
Good luck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
