yes, but we also have a SCOTUS decision saying that using said cell phone data - like a geofence location data search - is unconstitutional. general warrants dont fly.
yet all those APRL cameras and their databases require no warrant at all to search.
so please stop minimimizing the bad about these camera systems with silly "whataboutism's" like that.

One of the local city's around here went nuts with installing flock cameras here over the last week or so.
There are 7+ new cameras within about a 2 mile stretch of pontic trail going thru the wixom area.
Several have already been tagged by locals - one woth the sign shown, another with one of the deflock yard signs next to it in the grass.
The wild part is another municipality just a few miles down the road - south lyon - has canceled all of their APRL contracts and has been bagging the cameras. Apparently the contract they agreed to doesn't allow them to remove them, but they can disable them and wait for flock contractors to remove them at the end of the contract.
The bad part is is that they're only covering the cameras with the plastic bags, which way may or may not actually be effective with the infrared and doesn't stop them from collecting any of the digital signal data that they're picking up. The locals are trying to convince them to go back out and put a bag over the solar panels as well to shut them down completely but we'll see how that fight goes.
Hawley’s Flock bill
“AI-powered cameras produced by Flock and its competitors are tracking and creating digital footprints of everyday Americans — a nightmare for individual liberties unless Congress enacts meaningful rules and accountability,” argued Sen. Josh Hawley on Tuesday. “That’s why I’m introducing the STOP Flock Abuse Act to establish basic safeguards for AI-powered cameras and protect Americans’ fundamental constitutional rights. Law-abiding Americans should not be treated like criminals.” Hawley’s bill would set strict limits on local governments’ collection and use of vehicle data camera technology. These limits would require the permanent deletion of driver data within 10 days of collection unless it is part of an ongoing criminal investigation. The bill also bans these AI networks from using facial recognition technology. Hawley’s legislation follows an investigation he launched into Flock and similar tech companies.

Unregistered Flock cameras found in Florida
St. Lucie County residents decided to remove all of their county’s Flock cameras, but after local law enforcement removed all of theirs, 14 other cameras were found within the county. Citizens are understandably unnerved about this revelation and are concerned about who owns these cameras and, more importantly, who is watching them. Three of the cameras were claimed by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, but information concerning the ownership of the remaining 11 remains unknown. As an alternative solution, the county placed plastic bags over the unknown cameras. This episode may be due to clerical errors, of course, but having this many cameras outside local law enforcement control calls into question the dealings of Flock Safety or similar companies.

wont help anything. just makes your car more unique. they're just not tracking plates - they track any unique identifiers on your vehicle. aftermarket rims. cracked windshields. bumper stickers. window vinyl. dents. etc etc etc.
also... this sounds like a great way to get flagged for shit you're not doing if someone else with that plate number sets up an alert.
so...neat idea. good for a giggle
but also epic fail on the practical level.
