Getting a barrel threaded? * pics added

I'm new to rifle building, I have a DPMS with a 16" bull barrel. My question is can a tool and die company tap a barrel for a muzzel brake or would a gunsmith be more appropriate? Also looking for some info on removing the stock handguard which has left me stumped. Thank you for any help

Ok thank you ill check into it, that's a different style handguard than I have, mine is a tube style that's threaded. The handguard I bought clamps on in two halves, but I don't know how it goes on over the stock threaded lug

+1, for ADCO. They do nice work and they are pretty reasonable on cost too.

I am near Springfield. GAP will make a custom thread protector so when you have it on you cannot tell its even threaded.

THis is a bad picture but you can see with it not threaded on all the way that it matches up nicely.
I am no way connected to them other than I spent my money with them and they do a first class job.

Post pictures of the handguard and we should be able to walk you through getting it off or point you in the right direction.
 
Looks like you may need a new barrel nut. The one in the picture is not a standard nut and looks to be proprietary to the hand guard that was on there. What type of hand guard are you trying to install?
 
Handguard in the picture looks like it 2pc that uses the factory delta ring setup. Strap wrench or leather strap and pipe wrench will work to get the nut off that is on there.
 
Your new hanguard wont work with what you have. You need a barrel nut wrench to get that barrel nut off. I assume it has holes all the way around the face of it. Then pick out a free float tube which will either come with a new barrel nut or you may have to purchase a standard barrel nut.

A upper receiver vice would be another handy tool along with a torque wrench to mount to the barrel nut wrench when you put the new one on.
