Getting cores out of cow horns

I know that its been covered here before, but I cant find it in the archives. How does everyone get the cores out of fresh cut cow horns? I think these were cut off the cow yesterday.

I have them boiling right now. How long should they cook?

Cool off before trying to pull them out? any tools work better than others?

i have heard about boiling them out .but never tryed it. i have some but they were left to rot out. just boil them till the bone gets loose in the horn and then pull them out. i would try a pair of needle nose pliers.

Boil them and beat them on the concrete. If the cores don't fall out...boil some more.

I've heard of microwaving them....but GROSS! My wife would shoot me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I screw a 3" wood screw, or lag bolt if you need the gription, about 1.5" in the center of the core then boil for 30-40 min. Then I take the horn out of the water, with gloves, and pull the screw and out the core comes! Take the screw out and throw the core to the dogs(this part is really funny if the core is still scalding hot!). Another tip is DO NOT try to use the same pot for cooking tamales that you used for boiling horns if you wife is around. They tend to discredit the theroy that boiling kills germs etc...

I boil them. How long, depends on the horn/core. I've noticed some take longer than others, but I boil for about 30 min. to start. (I use a big stock pot...it's only use)
I take them out of the pot with water-pump pliers, then grab ahold with a leather-gloved hand...& using the other hand, I hit them a few times with a rubber mallet. Like has been said, if need be boil them some more. The longer they are out & in the cooler air, the more they will set back up.

I've tried to use a microwave, but just can't seem to get that to work correctly.

Bob, you should have called me... lol where did ou get your horns at?? we need to get hooked up again before the good hunting falls off.... you and justin having an luck this year?

Thanks Guys, Ill keep working on them. Boiled them for an hour and they were still tight. now that they are dry again seems to be a small gap there. might try heating them up again tomorrow and getting them out.

Steve,

I moved to the country...LOL Got them from the neighbor up the road. I had been eyeing up his one cow for awhile. told him to let me know if he was going to cut them off.

PM me your phone number, I think the one I have is your old cell.Ive got a few places I want to try that had lots of yote sign in deer season. Just waiting on some snow.

As far as luck, have been trapping quite a few fox, shooting a couple. Got a new lightforce for Christmas. I love it.

Shop still is in shambles from the move, one of these days ill get back to turning some calls.

I used to use a microwave in my shop to heat pronghorn sets until I could pull the cores. As long as they're fresh, it really didn't stink as much as you'd think. For bigger stuff, like bison horns, I had a turkey deep fryer set up for boiling.I actually boiled several sets of cape buffalo horns over the years in a 55 gallon drum. That was more for reassurance that there were no nasties left inside from the initial boil though, as the horns can't be pulled off the cores anyway.
