Getting Crows to Land?

What's the best way to get crows to land. I have about 18 crow deeks a foxpro fx3 and the WT caller. I usually shotgun them but was looking to take some out with the HMR.

Any ideas?

Kevin

i take em with airguns and rimfire alot
i use natural bait such as a corn field or road kill dragged into the field or gut pile or scraps
call em in with decs set near it
and wait

What works fairly well for me is to set my ECaller under a dead tree that I want the crow to land in then use a raspy bird sound, rabbit distress, or dying crow sound that gets their attention. They will want to land in the dead snag to get a good look and POOF..... just a few feathers floating down.

I prefer shotgun and full camo in a woods. They cannot see you through the trees. Just set you e-caller up at the base of a tree. then look for a good opening to shoot through. If your wearing full camo, you should be able to take many crows at a single stand. Unless you miss one. Then he will tell the others to leave. I use turkey loads #4,it penetrates leaves and small twigs well.

You'll definitely kill more with a shotgun. Bait & soft calling will get you a couple shots with a rifle around but action will be MUCH slower (verses hard calling/ run-gun). Another option is to set up in a field & call. Crows will investigate then fly off to the tallest tree other side of field & mock you. You'll make them smart, but get a few shots along the way. Don't carry the HMR though. When they light, it will be somewhere in the 300 yard range. Much closer & they'll opt to just keep going. Find a diff tree ~300 yards away & mock you...

Sometimes, your can soft call to get the crows coming & then hush you calls. Non-pressured crows sometimes loft in & land to scan the seen; in big woods or the like (they can see to good enough in a open already to need to scan much). Often you can get them to land in this situation but is seldom conducive for a clear lane of shooting.

Moral of the story, unless you've got a lot of time to shoot few crows... Carry a shotgun!

LOL... yes I know that is a good moral!.. I do shotgun for them usually 4's and used to be a die hard duck hunter on the marshes in NJ before I moved, so I know how much fun that can be and will still do that - I just wanted to change it up a bit and because it's predator season and small game season here also ...so I was trying to kill a few birds with one stone if you will - pun intended.

Alot of good info by everyone.. Wished they still let you shoot them at the dumps like they did 35 years ago.

Thanks everyone

I always throw out some corn and get in my deer stand after deer season and shoot them at 200 yds. Don't have any prairie dogs here so crows have to do. Rick

Get a can of quick foam and spray it out on a paper plate, let dry then spray it red with some blue in it.

Instant gut pile....crows love it.....

Well, there's always some whacky guy who likes to live on the edge and do things differently at times, like me for instance. I love shotgunning crows over a call and have been doing that for about 45 years, but having said that, doing a little crow sniping with a rifle in winter is a lot of fun too.

Success!? Depends on your point of view. If you need lots of birds on the ground to consider the hunt a success, then go with a shotgun. On the other hand, if success is being able to pop a bird or two out of a tree top (if safe where you hunt) or from a distance with a .17 HMR, then go for it. One bird could equal success if that's what you enjoy.

I thoroughly enjoy doing some winter-time crow shiping. I don't get many birds that way, but I have a great time trying. To me, that's success. Last year I even set up a small hunting blind to take an occassional crow, and would drink coffee and just enjoy being out. I've killed enough crows in my life to be able to relax a little and not have to count birds to feel success.

Here is a clip I have on YouTube if you want to check it out, and some previous posts.

Good shooting to you. The main thing is to enjoy what you do.

Dave, that is some mighty familiar territory. HeHeHe. Nice clip. Of course, you know MT does not have a closed season on crows.
John

Hey John,

Yea, I would say you recognize some of this territory.

No, I didn't realize Montana doesn't have a closed crow season. How did that happen?

Despite what the Feds want, MT has chosen not to list them as a game animal. I got the interpretation straight from the FWP main office in Helena. Of course, they were quick to point out that Ravens are protected.

Would be nice if other states would join in too. Seems the Feds overstep their bounds in many ways.

Very nice camera work on that youtube post. Makes me want to get out and do some crow hunting again.

Thanks Semp. I have fun trying. It's much harder to shoot a crow and work the video camera too, but it's a lot of fun when I do. Getting the shot on video is as pleasing as the hunt itself.

Here's a shotgunning clip if you would like to see that one.

Its kinda windy today plus its the youth hunt this weekend I was going to stay home and rest up for opening day this coming weekend but after watching that crow hunting video Im headed to the woods see you guys tonight! Thanks 6mmo6. ~marco
