Ghillie suits Good/Bad???

Just wondering what your oppinion on Ghillie suits are???

Im looking at a few camouflage options and need som advice....

They are EXCELLENT camouflage, but I'm afraid they'll get caught on fences. I haven't got mine out in the coyote field yet. It worked good enough to get an antelope within 20 yards /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
 
A cheap alternative is the new lightweight 3-D suits for sale at all the outdoor stores. At about $80 a set for elastic bottoms and a zip up wind-breaker styled jacked with hood- it can't be beat. Many companies make them in various different camo patterns to match the vegetation in your area.

I own 2, 1 Advantage Max 1 desert pattern and another darker forest camo for the AZ mountain region. I am very surprised at the breathability of the outfits. I have taken mine out iin 100 degree weather 2 dozen times with shorts and a t-shirt under it and it's not that bad.

I recently purchased a ball cap in 3d leafy material and gloves to match- I'm planning on creeping up on a coyote and tackle it since so many coyotes are within the city limits here in Queen Creek, AZ.
 
Well if you like them get one, but their really just something to sell. Their hot, heavy and usually hang up on almost everything. They collect stuff you sit or lay in and they are expensive.

Wear some nice camo and be comfortable.

Did I say a waste of money.
 
There is nothing better to break up your image or to hide you, if you know how to use one.

But like the others, they get caught on limbs and fences and stuff, the 3-D camo is a much better compromise.
 
I love ghillie suits, but they are heavy, thick and just plain get caught on everything. If you plan on traveling a long distance with it on you better be in shape or drink lots of water, because you are going to sweat like a pig. My suggestion would be to keep it rolled up till you are going to use it or go to a lightweight 3-D suit. Joel
 
I am planning to roll mine up between stands, as it only takes 30 seconds. For those trips where we might be walking aways I'm going to have some normal camo on.
 
I've only tried mine a few times, but I don't wear them while walking. I carry them rolled up. They are perfect for places where you have absolutely no cover to sit or stand by. 99.99% of the time regular camo and stillness on stand gets the job done.
 
I like the ultralight shaggy by Rancho Safari- it weighs less than 3 lbs and rolls up quick, when used it completely breaks up your outline. I put it on when I get to a stand, I don't use it all the time but it sure comes in handy in some places. It costs about 100$ or so. Jerry at Rancho Safari is a good guy to deal with. I like it but don't always like to carry it. Also works best I think before winter sets in or before snow camo is more practical, then I like simple natgear coverups. Greg

That is the key right there, movement.

Unless you are a sniper hunting humans, a ghillie is probably unreasonable.

Although, a ghillie will allow for a little extra forgiveness with your movement because you don't look like a human, you look like a big blob.

All that being said I still own one...

I only wear the top half piece, I didnt get any ghillie pants because all i really need is my top covered.

we need pix of Saint nick taking a yote. That would be hilarious if someone one here could put on the suit and go out for a few stands. That would settle some of the camo/no camo arguments. Good luck. Ho-ho-ho
 
I seem to remember Tyler Higgins calling in a double ...... while wearing a pink easter bunny outfit. His Dad, not to be outdone, did the same thing, only he (and a friend) were wearing a crazy cow costume. I don't recall which end of the cow Rich was in. Good thing only coyotes were called in. i just bought a new suit from cabelas today that i had been tyring to order from them.. they had told me they were out of them but when i went to the store today they had a few sets on the rack.. i jumped on them quick.. 69 for the pants and 79 for the jacket.. the hood was 25 i think.. it is made to be worn over other hunting clothes.. it is VERY lightweight... i love this outfit and cant wait to try it out this weekend.. i have 4 days off so we'll see how it works.. heres a pic of it..
