No trouble here, Kelly. I have the lightweight RS longcoat, so it's not a sticker magnet like some other materials.

BTW, Ranch Safari can totally recondition your ghillie suit from patching rips in the jacket to replacing worn out material at the bottom for a fee of $30....not bad.

I have to admit I tried one once down here. Thinking it would give me an edge when you have to give up the sun to get the wind right.
I decided that being able to make a long range shot downwind was more to my liking.

I was laid off a few years ago and decided to build one. What I did was purchase some cargo net from a Army-Navy surplus store and basically made a pancho and cut a slit for your head. Next I bought some burlap and camo saddle cloth. The burlap I cut into different lengths about 1 1/2" to 2" wide and died them in earth tone colors. The saddle cloth I took and traced a 2 1/2 " or so leaf pattern (cottonwood leaf) and left a tab at the top to wrap around the net loop and glued with tear mender. The thing looks absolutely awesome. The draw back is the thing is very heavy and hot. So to tell you the truth I have never taken it out in the field. The only time I have worn it was on a couple of Halloweens with a demented mask with my kids. The compliments I have received from going from door to door speaks for itself. I'd say I have maybe $40 to $50 into it but around 20hrs of time. If some one really wanted to see it, I could try to get a photo up. Not the best at the computer.

Ya platapus you have to show it to us. You built it just the same as I have been wanting to. I was just not so sure how the final product was gonna look so now I have to see yours.
 
I know that the front on my house is not the exact terrian match but its the best I could do on short notice. For being home made I can't complain to much. The thing is probably 10 years old. What do you think? If your going to build one I'll try and help with any info I can. Good luck!

Nice. I like it. Looks as good as any one you can buy to me. If I can make me one like that for 40 bucks or so I will be all over it. Thanks for showing the pics. Im gonna buy me some net this weekend and get started.
 
Ok I bought a 5'X10' cargo net from the army store and a huge burlap sack they use to put sheep wool in. I am going to buy some camo material form the army store also. What I am wondering is if i should make it like a pancho or kind of like a long jacket. I just cant picture how to make the cargo net frame or base or whatever you want to call it. I mean do i just cut a hole in it to stick my head through or am I shaping it like a hooded pancho or jacket?

After I figure that part out then what. Do I start form the bottom and work my way around then up just tying the strips in random spots? Or am I glueing them or what? Platapus, if you can I could use some close up pic of how you conected you strips to the cargo net. Thanks for any ideas that might help out.

I'll try and do my best to help. First , yes what I did was basically form a pancho. A mistake I made when doing this was making it to long. I would try and make it no longer than your knees. With a pair of camo paints on under- neath you'll be good. Second the way I attached the patterns was at the top (of the pattern) was to cut or leave a tab that is say 3/4' long and 1/2' wide that you wrap around the net and glue. What I used was a product called tear mender. If you went to a fabric store and explained what you were doing they could find you something simular. Tacky glue or something. I'd like to see your final product. Good luck!

Another (cheaper) option for camo or earth tone fabric is Thrift stores. You can also use your old, torn or outgrown camos. Garden centers sell rolls of burlap that work out to be pretty cheap. I've made two Ghillies so far and both times I used too much material. Don't over do it. You can always add more later.

Oh, you don't necessarily have to use camo fabric. You can use various solid earth tone fabrics to create a camo effect. Very few pieces of fabric in this Ghille is camo cloth.

I make ghillie suits on a regular basis for hunting and friends that are LE Snipers. I take a flight suit, netting, Turnip Twine, Shoe Goo, heavy needle and waxed floss. takes about a week to make a full sized one.
 
Do you have any pictures? I would like to see. I have some of my material together but have not started. I'm just real sure about the pancho Ghillie cause it sure seems like it would mess up my visibility. I would rather it be sort of a long jacket style. I was thinking of just attaching some strips to one of my old hats to break up the pattern on my head. That way I would still be able to see really good. I got some good ideas from this here on how to connect the material but would like to see other types as well. I like the thought of a flight suit so I can just step in and zip it up.
